Clean grape cultivation experiment in Can Tho
Date: 28/06/2021

Can Tho Farm (at 79A Vo Van Kiet, Can Tho) is a familiar destination for many tourists, especially those who enjoy consuming clean agricultural products and visiting experimental or educational models of agriculture. Besides hydroponic vegetables and cantaloupe (melon), the experimental viticulture model has created a new attraction for many tourists.

Since the beginning of June 2021, the Can Tho Farm has started welcoming visitors to this model of viticulture. This experimental area has around 200 vines, including 4 grape varieties: red grape from Ninh Thuan, French, American, and Japanese grapes. Currently, the vines are fruitful with very pretty reddish bunches of grapes for extraordinary “check-in” photos. However, this is only a small part of the route to visit the site. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phong, operator of Can Tho Farm: “From the start of the production of this model, we would like to orient visitors towards organic farming. Therefore, visitors can not only explore the site but also learn our experiences and knowledge about the cultivation of other species.”

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phong, to have a complete experimental model, it is necessary to go through several stages. The first stage is a combination of research, selection, and hybridization of grape varieties adapted to the soil and natural conditions. Then, the vine must give a stable harvest and create cuttings. Thus, such a completed model usually requires 2-4 years of preparation. Concretely, Mr. Nguyen Van Phong started to implement it in 2018. Now the vines are producing for the second time with a fairly stable fruit yield as well as obtaining the cuttings. These hybrid grape varieties adapt well to the soil of the Mekong Delta.

Along with viticulture, Can Tho Farm has also experience in apple growing, which is gradually improving. Apple trees were crossbred from local and Thai varieties, yielding large, green, crunchy, and sweet apples, with a sweet and sour taste, slightly harsh and fragrant. The peculiarity of this variety of apple is that its pulp is not viscous but firm and juicy. This model also welcomes visitors. Apart from vine and apple trees, Can Tho Farm is currently trying to plant other fruit trees such as mulberry, raspberry, cherry, etc. Mr. Nguyen Van Phong said: “The slogan “Products from farm to table” is the direction we want to aim for in the long term. Agricultural products are grown, harvested, and prepared on-site into a variety of products that are clean, safe, and healthy.

The farm has an area of over 7,000 m2, including an exhibition area for specialties from the Mekong Delta, an organic product stand, an area for growing organic vegetables in hydroponics and on the ground, a nursery, greenhouses for growing cantaloupe, grapes, apples ... and a pond for fish farming. In each season, tourists can visit the corresponding models. In particular, for vegetables, they can pick themselves, take away or eat on the spot at any time. With its educational experiences in organic farming, Can Tho Farm becomes a prime weekend destination for many people, especially families with young children or students.

To ensure the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Can Tho Farm only welcomes groups of 10 visitors. Moreover, visitors must register in advance so that the Can Tho Farm can organize an appropriate visit program, while strictly following the 5K message. Currently, on-site consumer services are not available, agricultural products are available for take-away.

Ticket price to discover the experimental model is 40,000 VND/adult and 25,000 VND/child, including a bottle of cantaloupe juice and a portion of fresh cantaloupe.
