Phong Dien District currently has 59 tourist sites, 26 of which are gardens. In the first 2 months of 2019, it welcomed about 533,000 visitors. As compared to the same period of last year, this number was 40% higher. Among these visitors, about 4,370 were international ones, making up an increase of 12%. Total tourism revenue in the past 2 months reached 148,371 billion VND, making up an increase of 41%.
According to a recent survey on potential sites for developing ecotourism in Phong Dien, about 70-80% of visitors went to the gardens by waterways. International ones especially loved small canals. Commenting on their common disadvantage, the owners of these places said that small and shallow canals make it difficult to travel by boats, and they often run aground. They suggested local authorities and other relevant agencies dredge canals properly for tourism development.
According to Mr. Truong Quang Hoai Nam, with its various advantages, especially ecosystems full of canals and gardens, Phong Dien District can diversify its ecological and educational tours. Yet, its tourism attraction is still limited. To foster the local tourism, much has to be implemented. The local authorities need to have appropriate planning and investment, especially in tourism infrastructure such as arranging river and bicycle routes logically, having plans for dredging canals, making traffic systems more appropriate, investing more in stopovers. They have to cultivate the advertisement for all aspects of the local tourism on various kinds of multimedia; set up signs to tourist destinations; explore more stories about the local culture and customs so as to attract more visitors to this district.
