The project of the Can Tho waste-to-energy plant was officially kicked off on June 30th, 2017 and completed in November 2018. The plant applies advanced technology, which meets European and Vietnamese standards, to burn waste and produce electricity while saving energy and reducing emissions (saving 25,000 tons of coal as well as reducing CO2 emission about 10,400 tons each year). It is estimated that the plant can handle 146,000 tons of household waste to generate about 60,000,000 KWh of clean electricity annually. The plant is built with the goal of using resources effectively, contributing to the waste treatment and environmental protection.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Dao Anh Dung, Permanent Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee stated that Can Tho city always shows great care of environmental protection and development of green economy. This is also the first project in Can Tho city to apply advanced technology to solve the problem of domestic waste, create a new and environmentally-friendly energy source and ensure sustainable development in accordance with the general planning of solid waste management activities of Can Tho city until 2030 and with a vision to 2050.

Additionally, Mr. Dao Anh Dung asked Can Tho EB to operate the plant safely in line with environmental regulations and asked the relevant authorities to support the company in order to ensure the effective operation of the plant. By doing so, the plant can become one of the advanced technology adoption models suitable for the practical conditions of the city and can be replicated in other provinces and cities of Vietnam as a sustainable waste treatment solution.
