With the potentials, advantages, and outstanding tourism products compared to other provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta, by 2020, although being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, Can Tho tourism has welcomed 5,605,865 tourists (down 36.8% over the same period in 2019); The number of tourists staying overnight reached 2,020,145 (down 32.8% over the same period).

Specifically, the number of foreign tourists staying overnight was estimated at 111,420 (down 72.7% over the same period), and the number for domestic tourists was about 1,908,725 (down 26.5% over the same period). The total revenue from tourism is estimated at 3,169 billion VND (down 28.6% over the same period).

Strengthen the linkage

After the Covid-19 pandemic is basically under control, tourism activities in Can Tho city are about to restart. Can Tho focus on connecting travel companies of the city with travel companies from other provinces and cities in the North, especially Hanoi.

Highly appreciating the potentials and advantages of Hanoi and Can Tho in cooperating for tourism development, Mr. Duong Tan Hien, Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city said: “Can Tho city, along with the provinces in the Mekong Delta, the localities in the North of Vietnam and Hanoi city have the similar geographical location, climate, and resources. Our tourism products also have cultural characteristics of two separate regions. This is a distinct advantage because we can support each other to make tours, and attract tourists to experience tourism products between localities”.

Over the years, Hanoi city and Can Tho city have worked together and supported each other in many fields, including tourism. Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism of Hanoi city, Tran Trung Hieu said: “Each locality has its own strengths and potentials to build unique tourism products. Tourism products in each locality have their own attraction, with their own strengths in terms of geographical location, potentials, and resources. Therefore, it is necessary to connect value chains to provide tourists attractive and rich tourism products”.

Sharing the same viewpoint, Mr. Ho Xuan Phuc, General Director of Hanotours said: “The cooperation between travel companies in Hanoi and in Can Tho will give us more partners, expand our businesses and improve the service quality to serve customers better. Besides, this cooperation also helps travel companies in Hanoi to have more new products from Can Tho in particular and the Western region in general in the coming time ”.

In order to promote cooperation and strengthen the linkage between Hanoi and Can Tho in the coming time, the Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism of Hanoi city, Tran Trung Hieu suggested that the Department of Tourism of two cities need to commit to continue promoting cooperation in tourism development, especially creating unique products and focusing on domestic tourists; ensuring safe and attractive tourism products.

In addition, the two cities need to strengthen cooperation in marketing and promoting unique tourism resources and products of each locality; building links between websites; coordinating in organizing tourism events, promotional activities; enhancing cooperation, exchanging experience in tourism management, building tourism products and training human resources; coordinating to create favorable conditions to call for investments in the establishment of unique tourism products ...

On November 18th, 2020, within the framework of the Vietnam International Tourism Market - VITM Hanoi 2020, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho city held a conference on tourism promotion themed “Welcome to Can Tho, a city of rivers”.

At the conference, more than 20 travel companies and agencies of Can Tho introduced new and unique tourism products to businesses in Hanoi and the Northern provinces and cities in response to the tourism stimulus program of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Within the framework of the conference, 8 enterprises representing the two cities of Can Tho and Hanoi signed a cooperation agreement to enhance cooperation in the coming time.
