The new face of Can Tho tourism

Having defined tourism as a cutting-edge economic sector, the city of Can Tho is developing many decisive strategies including Resolution No. 03-NQ/TU dated August 1st, 2016 of the Municipal Committee of the Communist Party relating to tourism development (Resolution No. 03), the beginnings of the promotion of the smoke-free industry. Can Tho tourism has been undergoing rapid change for 5 years.

Resolution No. 03-NQ/TU is embodied in the texts and programs of practical activities relevant to each locality. Can Tho tourism has therefore experienced positive changes in many aspects and gradually created its commercial brand as “Ideal - Safe - Friendly - Quality Destination”, “Center of Mekong River Civilization”. During the period 2016 - 2020, the city received 35 million tourists, up 12% from the target indicated in the Directive; 11.5 million overnight stays, up 11% compared to the target indicated in the Directive (i.e. 1.5 million overnight stays by international tourists compared to 10 million local visitors). Total tourism receipts occupy 8% of the city's GRDP (Gross Regional Domestic Product). Tourism has 6,000 direct workers, 70% of whom are trained.

The most remarkable change in Cần Thơ tourism in recent years is the definition of the target. These are assets such as river tourism, cultural and historical tourism, and MICE (meeting trips, incentives, congresses, events). Tourism products are therefore developed on the basis of diversification and quality. Each locality is concerned with its typical tourist products. Specifically, Ninh Kieu exploits its MICE asset; Cai Rang manifests river tourism with the Preservation and Development of the Cai Rang Floating Market Project; Phong Dien takes advantage of its potential of the ecological city; Binh Thuy is developing its community-based tourism linked to historical-cultural remains, etc.

From this orientation, many products inspired by the local culture were born and known to the public such as community-based tourism of Son islet and Tan Loc islet; ecological sites, farms from Ong De, Chin Hong, Cantho Farm, Bao Gia Trang Vien, etc. Can Tho destinations are becoming more diverse and offering more experiences. Specifically, the Son islet, known for its “fish specialty”, presents its new shows: flying snakeheads, fish eating rice with a spoon, etc. Tan Loc islet is recognized as the fertile land of orchards. Can Tho tourism is increasingly exploiting its advantage of river lines such as the tourist boat of Victoria Mekong Can Tho - Chau Doc - Phnom Penh, the high-speed boat of Mai Linh Express Can Tho - Con Dao; 3 cruises with restaurants for night visits and so on.

Technical infrastructures are developing both qualitatively and quantitatively. New establishments of luxury trade and tourist services are invested and come into operation such as the 5-star hotel Muong Thanh, the 5-star hotel Vinpearl Can Tho, the 4-star hotel Ninh Kieu Riverside, Azerai resort on Au islet, CB Palace convention center, etc. The “Co.opmart”, “Mega market”, “GO! "; “Lotte”, “Vincom Plaza” Hung Vuong and Xuan Khanh, “Sense City” shopping centers contributing to the diversification of services, meeting the requirements of MICE tourism, and attracting visitors. On the other hand, the city has enhanced the quality of festivals and events. For example, the festival of traditional southern cakes; VITM (Vietnam International Tourism Fair) Can Tho in 2019; Technology Demo on the connection between supply and demand; Vietnam-Japan cultural and commercial exchanges, and so on. Cultural events and local festivals create the typical feature for Can Tho tourism: Tourist and cultural festival of the Cai Rang floating market, Phong Dien green tourism day, Tan Loc orchard festival, Ninh Kieu Floating Lantern Festival, and the like. Besides, the People's Committee of Can Tho city promulgated Decision No. 2863/QD-UBND dated November 5th, 2018 relating to the approval of the project “each municipality has its own product” for the period 2018-2020, with a vision to 2030. 40 local products were selected. In particular, a cultural tourist village and five others associated with local products are to be developed in order to support the standardization of products, improve the quality of agricultural and non-agricultural production, and of the asset services of each locality according to the value chain. To date, 19 products are rated from 3 to 4 stars.

The city of Can Tho also advocates support for residents doing tourism; establish preferential policies for investment in tourism; opens new airlines and increases the frequency of flights connecting Can Tho city to other provinces, cities in the country, and abroad. Furthermore, the city focuses on the training of human resources in tourism; often renews propaganda, promotion, and coordination; focuses on building tourism infrastructure.

Resolution No. 03, one might say, has changed the consciousness of the political system, of the companies, of the inhabitants who cooperate closely for the new face of tourism in the city. It is thanks to cognitive transformation, to shared responsibility that Can Tho tourism has developed sustainably and safely for years. The management and exploitation of tourist resources are showing good signs by offering new, diversified, quality, and professionalized products like river tourism, MICE tourism, community-based tourism, agricultural tourism, etc. In addition, the organization of tourist activities in Can Tho linked to events, cultural and sporting festivals at regional, national, and international levels is becoming more and more professional, which enhances the position and prestige of the city and spreads its beautiful and impressive image.

After 5 years, Resolution No. 03 became reality and brought positive results to the tourism sector of Can Tho city. The challenges are gradually being overcome. Particularly in the complex situation of the COVID-19 pandemic since 2019, Resolution No. 03 has built a basis for the city's tourism to intervene in time by offering products based on safety criteria. The high growth rate, new tourism products, expanded connection, and coordination reflect the lever for tourism development created by Directive No.03.
