Tourism promotional strategy 2020: Connecting key cities with air routes to Can Tho

Can Tho tourism had a successful year as it welcomed approximately 8.8 million visitors. It was the result of a long process of constantly raising competitiveness and restructuring the tourism market. Not only identifying key markets, Can Tho tourism also actively improved and diversified marketing strategies, especially the application of information technology to enhance and heighten the image and status of Can Tho tourism.
Charter flights helped increasing the number of visitors to Can Tho

The tourism promotional program of Can Tho in 2018 - 2020, vision to 2030, identifies the tourism industry to actively enhance propaganda and promotional activities on land, people and cultural identities, tourism potential of Can Tho to numerous domestic and foreign tourists. Improving the quality and effectiveness of promotional activities to be professional, renewing and improving the content, ensuring efficiency, and having clear topics.

In 2019, Can Tho tourism effectively held many marketing and cooperation activities as well as connecting and expanding many markets: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Hai Phong, Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, etc. Can Tho tourism also participated in 20 local and international events. In particular, the promotion topic is clearly defined as "Come to Can Tho - the city of rivers". The positive outcome of this activity has contributed to the achievement of 8.8 million visitors, including about 3 million in-house guests, the total revenue from tourism is about 4,400 billion VND.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang On, Director of Can Tho Tourism Development Center, said: “For many years, the tourism industry has improved its competitiveness and identified key markets for effective promotion and connection. We focus on improving and diversifying types of marketing strategies, especially applying modern technology to increase interaction with visitors.” In fact, the increase in visitors to Can Tho is partly due to the continuous flight routes opened in 2019. Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, said: “The number of routes connecting directly to Can Tho city in 2019 increased by 2-3 times compared to previous years, the number of passengers taking flights increased by nearly 25%." On this basis, Can Tho has promoted tourism in Nghe An, Hai Phong, Malaysia and expanded to associated regions: Vietnam North Central, Vietnam Northeast, Vietnam Southeast and Southeast Asia.

In 2020, with 2 new routes named Can Tho - Korea and Can Tho - Taiwan (scheduled to open in January) as well as other successfully operated flight routes in 2019, Can Tho introduces key markets to promote tourism such as Hanoi, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Taiwan, Thailand. In addition, Can Tho tourism focuses on potential markets in Europe, Japan, China and South Korea. Mr. Nguyen Hoang On, Director of Can Tho Tourism Development Center, said: “In 2020, we will go into deeply and effectively study the signed contents, especially on tourism promotion. We will also improve the promotional activities and cooperation with key tourism markets inside and ouside Vietnam, especially with destinations having direct flights to Can Tho. Moreover, we focus on connecting major destinations in the Greater Mekong sub-region, in order to build highly competitive international tourism programs.”

Besides, Can Tho will participate in a number of activities: Vietnam International Tourism Fair in Hanoi (April 2020), Vietnam International Tourism Fair in Ho Chi Minh City (September), cultural and tourism events of An Giang, Dong Thap, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Tra Vinh; coordinating with Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and the Mekong Delta Tourism Association to promote tourism in potential international markets like Korea, Japan, China and Europe. Another crucial task is to apply information technology in tourism promotion. The city tourism industry is rebuilding the database to provide sufficient information for the marketing activities as well as meeting the needs of tourism information for businesses and tourists. Furthermore, the city continues to improve and promote Can Tho tourism portal and “Can Tho Tourism” application on mobile phones. On the other hand, Can Tho tourism also conducts research on market development as well as actively building and enhancing the position of enterprises in promoting Can Tho tourism.
