Date: 12/09/2018

At present, there are over 25 homestays in Can Tho city. According to several travel agencies, visitors to Can Tho often stroll around Ninh Kieu first, then Cai Rang floating market and homestay is their last stop.
Experiencing one day being the landlord in My Khanh Tourist Village

More than two thirds of homestays in Can Tho are located in Phong Dien district and Cai Rang district. These include activities such as go sightseeing around the orchard, gardening, farming, growing vegetable, netting, scooping ditch to fishing, enjoying traditional cakes, riding for exploring the village and the people’s life in the Western Region as well as eating and sleeping at homestay.

The tourism service in Can Tho homestays has the general formula. However if we are going into details, it shows many unique features. Foreigners prefer to choose quiet gardens, fresh air and rustic garden house, whereas domestic visitors prefer places with many games, interesting experiences, and many specialties.

Therefore, many tourist garden owners choose a specific type of visitors to design the space and the service product. For example, Ivory Bamboo Resort and Lotus Village (Binh Thuy) aim at foreign tourists (especially "backpackers"), so the accommodation is designed simply: thatched roofs in the quiet garden, cheap price (about 200,000 VND/night), bicycle rental (50,000 VND/day and 30,000/half-day), motorbike hire (150,000 VND/day and 100,000 VND/half day). Visitors can go sightseeing by themselves to explore the countryside as well as many handicraft villages which foreign tourists, especially young tourists are very fond of.

My Khanh tourist village (My Khanh district, Phong Dien district) - one of the most famous tourist spots in Can Tho, invested by Denmark to build "The tourism model of traditional handicraft village and homestay" with 12 bungalows in a large and cool garden to serve tourists. Mr. Pham Minh Sang, deputy director of My Khanh Tourist Village, said: My Khanh tourist village has many activities for visitors to try, "most prevalent” are "One day being the landlord", "One day being a farmer". The package price for accommodation and sightseeing for a group of 5-10 guests to participate in "One day being the landlord" is 960,000 VND/person; a 3-hour landlord’s meal with 8 rural specialties with the price of 590,000 dong/person such as grilled snakehead fish, fried Broadhead catfish with ginger fish sauce, mango salad with minced dried snakehead fish, steamed wine chicken, fish sauce hotpot or “mam chung”, fried chicken with citronella and chili or braised duck with ginger and so on. Foreign visitors coming to My Khanh really like “one day being a farmer” because there are ditches, orchards, vegetable gardens as well as kitchens for visitors to cook their own dishes.

Many foreigners coming to Phong Dien have chosen Muoi Cuong Homestay (No. 275, My Ai hamlet, My Khanh, Phong Dien). Currently, there are dozens of travel agencies choose Muoi Cuong as a homestay to attract foreign visitors. Every day, there are 20-30 groups of foreign tourists coming to Muoi Cuong because of its 1.2-hectare of cocoa garden with more than 2,000 trees. Furthermore, the owner of Muoi Cuong himself guides and introduces foreigners the cocoa garden as well as showing them the cocoa processing in both English and French. Tourists can also enjoy a cup of hot cocoa or cold cocoa or try a glass of Phong Dien cocoa wine.

Another emerging destination chosen by domestic visitors as the weekend destination is Xeo Nhum Eco-Garden (Xeonhum Homestay) in area 5, Hung Thanh Ward, Cai Rang District, only about 5km away from the center of Can Tho. There is a 1.6-hectare garden which is divided into 3 areas: longan orchard (eating place), fish pond (canoeing, wooden boat rowing, fishing) and resort (14 bungalows) on the lotus pond, water lilies pond as well as a vegetables garden for visitors to enjoy their self-made food. Xeo Nhum Eco-Garden also associates with 5 neighboring orchards of tangerine, orange, grapefruit, mangosteen and rambutan to serve visitors. Visitors coming to Xeo Nhum can enjoy many unique rustic dishes such as tre chicken steamed with grapefruit, mangosteen salad with sliced chicken, young sponge gourd salad with grilled Broadhead catfish, grapefruit salad with seafood, steamed escargot with calabash, Pangasius fish cooked with bush grape and so on, are all Xeo Nhum’s "homegrown" dishes.

In order to develop homestay tourism better, local authorities, investors and tourism managers of Can Tho are working together to create image, brand and regularly innovate products so as to make this type of tourism closer to the local life.
