Date: 15/07/2021

The Cần Thơ Association Of Photographic Artists is exhibiting the photo contest named “Cần Thơ rendezvous” at the Cần Thơ city branch of the Việt Nam Union of Literature and Arts Associations (No. 170, Ly Tu Trong Street, Ninh Kieu District). There are 111 photographic works in the exhibition, including 11 awarded ones, illustrating the beauty of Cần Thơ city today.
Visitors to the “Can Tho rendezvous” photo exhibition.

Prominent at the exhibition is the first prize-winning artwork named “Cánh chuồn tuổi thơ” (Children’s dragonfly wings). Photographic artist Phạm Trần Vũ said that he shot this photo while seeing farmers using a machine to water a newly pruned cornfield in the district of Cờ Đỏ. The image of water spray on that cornfield is like dragonflies spreading their wings. The photo is not too colorful but impressive with a good story, solid composition, and wonderful moment. Photographic artist Phạm Trần Vũ said that the photo was taken by chance during a photography trip with a flycam at a medium height, showing the new rural development in Cần Thơ city.

The two artworks that won the second prize in the contest also brought viewers a lot of emotions. Photographic artist Văn Ngọc Nhuần with the work “Sắc chiều trên dòng sông chợ nổi Cái Răng” (Sunset on the Cái Răng floating market) captures the sunset moment at the confluence of Cái Răng Bé canal and Cần Thơ river with the Cái Răng bridge connecting the two banks. The red and yellow color of dusk makes the photo stand out when the city has just lit up. Photographer Đỗ Tùng reselects the subject of labor with the photo “Nâng cấp đô thị” (Urban Upgrading). That is the scene of workers pulling plastic pipes to install underground electricity cables. The subject is not new, but the technique of photographic artist Đỗ Tùng makes the photo special.

The XXII Traditional Artistic Photo Contest - 2020 has 250 works by 21 contestants. As a result, the Organizing Board awarded 1 First prize, 2 Second prizes, 3 Third prizes, 5 Consolation prizes, and 100 other photos selected for exhibition. All 111 photos have a variety of themes and expressions illustrating the beauty of the land and the people of Cần Thơ. These are outstanding photos of new construction works, golden fields, tourist destinations, sports, craft villages, and so on. For example, photographic artist  Hồng Vân has 6 artworks selected for the exhibition (including 1 Consolation prize), most of which demonstrate the beauty of his homeland's culture. His works capture the moment of the spring on the floating market, the preparation for the kitchen god’s farewell ritual on December 23rd, the market in the early morning, the preparation for Tet or sightseeing in the countryside, etc. As a nostalgic person, photographer Lý Hồng Vân said that photography not only captures the beautiful moment “for fun” but also preserves and conveys cultural messages, documents for the next generations.

Photographic artist Tô Hoàng Vũ, Chairman of the Cần Thơ Association Of Photographic Artists, said: “This contest has many new candidates who have had their photos chosen for the exhibition for the first time. The good news is that the quality of the artworks submitted for the contest is getting better and better. In particular, the photographic artists are increasingly proficient in techniques to enhance the artistry of creative photography”. According to photographic artist  Hoàng Vũ, the contestants have well demonstrated the language of photography to convey messages and ideas. These are expressive perspectives on the idyllic and lively beauty of nature and the people of Cần Thơ city in today's pace of life.
