Digitalization - a solution to preserve and promote cultural heritage
Date: 29/10/2023

Digitalization is an urgent requirement in many areas of social life today. Therefore, digitalization in conserving museums and promoting heritage values is no exception.
Artifacts on display at the Temple of King Hung in Can Tho City are attached with QR codes. In the photo: Visitors examine a collection of pictures “Hung King Era and Dong Son Culture” at the Temple of Hung Kings in Can Tho City.

Recently, tourists often use their phones to scan QR codes for information when visiting many historical and cultural relics in Can Tho City. After extracting information about Can Tho Grand Prison from a QR code, Ly Hieu, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, said: “The information is short but complete and accurate because the specialists do it. I saved the info in my phone so I can learn more about it when I return”. This is a project carried out by Can Tho Youth Union called “Introducing historical and cultural relics of Can Tho City on a digital platform”. In addition to the QR Code, visitors can learn a lot of information about the relics that are vividly introduced at https://thanhnien.dulichso.cantho.gov.vn.

In the era of digital technology, digitalization to preserve and promote heritage is considered an urgent requirement. Recently, the culture sector of Can Tho City has paid attention to digitalization and received positive results. Over the past few years, Can Tho Museum has gradually innovated and applied information technology in professional activities such as inventory, preservation, display, introduction of artifacts, etc. It is easier and more convenient for the officials in Can Tho Museum to search and exploit data. Currently, the City Museum has digitized nearly 13,600 artifacts.

Since 2017, Can Tho Museum has built a website at https://baotangtpcantho.cantho.gov.vn. Can Tho Museum has paid more and more attention to digitalizing many documentary films to better heritage conservation. In particular, Can Tho Museum has applied QR codes to provide information about artifacts on display at the Temple of Hung Kings in Can Tho City.

Many localities across the country have conducted virtual reality tours as an inevitable trend. Although Can Tho City does focus on digitizing heritage, it is still not enough compared to actual needs. This is due to many reasons such as poor equipment systems, untrained human resources, financial problems, etc.

Speaking at the meeting to celebrate International Museum Day, Director of Can Tho Museum Le Hong Dong said: “Can Tho Museum will enhance digital transformation and information technology application in the upcoming time”.
