This event is one of the numerous activities to mark the 20th anniversary of Can Tho becoming a central-level city. It also responds to the “Can Tho joins hands for the poor” emulation movement and the "Month for the Poor and Social Welfare" in 2023 (October 17 - November 18, 2023) that aims to leave no poor people behind and improve social security. Moreover, the program aims to practically achieve its goals of welcoming the Vietnam Fatherland Front Congress at all levels for the 2024 - 2029 term, promoting community activities, as well as mobilizing funds to care for the poor and the disabled in the city.
Mr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho City, spoke at the event
According to Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho City Nguyen Trung Nhan, the “For the Poor” Fund has been receiving a lot of attention from the government, businesses, philanthropists, and people in the city, thus becoming a widespread movement throughout society.
Over the past two decades, the "For the Poor" Fund has received more than 390 billion VND, while social security programs have received 1,160 billion VND. With these funds, the city was able to build and repair over 19,000 houses for impoverished families, provide financial assistance to purchase materials and production tools, offer support for education and healthcare, donate gifts during holidays, and build thousands of civil works including rural roads, bridges, clean water systems, and road lighting, etc. The positive outcome of this effort not only provides tangible benefits but also brings happiness to numerous underprivileged households and those facing challenging circumstances. It helps improve the living conditions of residential areas, thus strengthening the national unity in Can Tho City.
Regarding the city's poverty reduction efforts, the rate of poor households according to multidimensional standards has decreased rapidly, down to 0.21% (equivalent to 764 households). The number of near-poor households is 5,888, which accounts for 1.59% of the population. People's lives have improved significantly due to these efforts. However, there are still individuals in remote areas, those affected by natural disasters and epidemics, individuals with serious illnesses, and other vulnerable groups facing various challenges.
