Project 3 (the project on Can Tho City development and enhancing urban adaptability) has been implemented since 2016 to avoid floodwater, ensure environmental hygiene and transport connectivity, and upgrade urban management capability and climate change adaptability for Can Tho City. Project 3 will exploit Can Tho City's potential and contribute significantly to the city’s sustainable development as a central city and the hub of the Mekong Delta. The project is also in line with the criteria of the World Bank, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Tran Viet Truong said.
Regarding the progress, the municipal authorities affirmed their determination to mobilize all available resources to achieve its objectives. Specifically, the city sped up site clearance, compensation, and resettlement for households affected by Project 3. The city will complete site clearance for all bidding packages under the project no later than August 15, 2023. So far, 61.3% of the workload has been completed such as embankments to protect the city from flooding, tidal sluice gates, etc.
Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee Tran Viet Truong said that Can Tho City mobilizes all available resources to develop Can Tho into a modern, civilized, and ecological city imbued with river cultural identity in the Mekong Delta according to the vision and goals of the Politburo's Resolution No. 59-NQ/TW dated August 5th, 2020. In particular, the city focuses on investment in the construction of resettlement and urban embellishment area to improve Can Tho people's quality of life. Therefore, Chairman Tran Viet Truong has proposed the World Bank support the Mekong Delta city to build 16 rural residential areas serving the resettlement for households affected by the development of projects in the locality. The 16 areas are set to span 1,150 ha in total, with their construction costing approximately 12 trillion VND (507.56 million USD).
