Diversifying the cooperative relationship between Japanese partners and Can Tho City
Date: 25/09/2023

On the afternoon of September 22nd, the Vietnam - Japan Friendship Association of Can Tho City held its Delegate congress for the 2023-2028 term. During this congress, the Executive Committee for the 2023-2028 term was elected, consisting of 19 members and 4 honorary members (Japanese entrepreneurs residing and working in Can Tho City). Associate Professor Dr. Le Viet Dung, former Vice-Rector of Can Tho University, was re-elected as the Chairman of the Friendship Association.
Mr. Tong Van Nhin, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in Can Tho City, and Ms. Le Thi Thanh Giang, Chairwoman of the Can Tho Union of Friendship Organizations, presented flowers to congratulate the newly elected Executive Committee of the Vietnam - Japan Friendship Association of Can Tho City for the 2023-2028 term.

During the previous term, the Vietnam - Japan Friendship Association of Can Tho City actively built and promoted the image, propaganda, and introduction of the environment, policies, potentials, opportunities, and investment connections between Can Tho City and Japan. They engaged in postgraduate training, organized scientific conferences, exchanged students for study abroad, and conducted various activities with universities in Vietnam and Japan. They also successfully mobilized scholarship programs from the Japanese government for students at Can Tho University. In collaboration with Can Tho University, they facilitated internships in Japan for students majoring in Agriculture University, Aquaculture University, and Environment Faculty (Can Tho University), creating a pool of highly skilled technical personnel for large farms and essential technology operations, as well as integrated agricultural production.

The association also signed cooperation agreements with 6 Japan-Vietnam Friendship Associations in different regions of Japan, including the Kansai Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association, Hyogo Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association, Kinki Region Japan-Vietnam-Railway Division Friendship Association, Oita Province Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association, and the East Japan Japan-Vietnam-Railway Division Friendship Association.

Furthermore, to further connect the Japanese community working and living in Can Tho City and neighboring provinces with the local residents, the association regularly collaborates with the Consulate General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City to organize vibrant and practical activities. These activities aim to attract citizens of both countries, including the Ishikawa-Vietnam Traditional Cultural Exchange Summer Festival and various friendship-building activities between Vietnam and Japan in Ho Chi Minh City. This also includes demonstrations of Japanese Kendo culture at Can Tho University, as well as activities within the framework of the commemorative program for the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations and the annual Vietnam-Japan Cultural and Trade Exchange Festival held in Can Tho City.

Furthermore, the association has also collaborated with Can Tho Union of Friendship Organizations to mobilize non-project aid for upgrading musical instruments for the Can Tho College of Culture and Arts as part of the "Cultural Infrastructure Assistance Program" funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. They actively contributed to the success of the "Upgrading Can Tho University Project," primarily financed through ODA loans from the Japanese government.

In the upcoming term, the association will continue to enhance cultural exchange activities, and people-to-people exchanges, and strengthen ties with local Japanese-friendly organizations. This will be achieved by providing guidance and coordinating activities with such organizations, as well as with provinces and cities in Vietnam that have established friendly cooperation relationships with Japanese prefectures and districts. The association will also research and propose solutions to expand cooperation with various partners in investment, trade, agriculture, and environmental sectors. Actively promoting and attracting Japanese investments into the city will be a priority. Additionally, the association will collaborate with Japanese partners to facilitate the sharing of scholarship information and exchange experiences for studying in Japan.

Speaking at the Congress, Mr. Tong Van Nhin, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in Can Tho City, proposed that the Executive Committee of the Association should remain flexible, proactive, innovative, and diversify cooperation between Japanese partners and Can Tho City in all areas, including politics, economics, culture, and society. They should also collaborate with the Can Tho Union of Friendship Organizations to leverage relationships with Japanese partners for the development of comprehensive cooperation with Can Tho City. Continuing to seek support from non-governmental organizations and Japanese businesses to jointly implement collaborative activities, and promote peace, solidarity, friendship, and investment will contribute to economic development, and social welfare, and strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
