Fully promote the role of culture, sports, and tourism towards sustainable development

On January 3rd, 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) organized a conference to summarize 2023 and deploy tasks for 2024 with the theme of "Promoting the driving role of culture, sports and tourism in the sustainable development of the country".

The conference was held directly at the International Conference Center in Hanoi, in combination with 63 online connection points in provinces and cities nationwide.

Attending the conference were Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Minister of MCST; leaders of ministries and sectors; leaders of People's Committees and culture, sports and tourism sectors of provinces and cities.

Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city, chaired the online conference in Can Tho.

In 2023, MCST advised the Government to submit to the National Assembly the Law on Cultural Heritage (amended), developed the National Target Program on the Development of Vietnamese Culture for the period 2025-2035...; effectively implemented the Program on Conservation and Sustainable Development of Vietnamese Cultural Heritage Values for the period 2021-2025; organized many important cultural events and activities with the highlight being the series of activities commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Draft on Vietnamese Culture. MCST signed 15 international agreements and commitments, thereby strengthening comprehensive international integration and cooperation. The work of building a cultural environment together with building a cultured person with the grassroots level as the focus, people as the subject to preserve and promote cultural values. Many new models, good practices and exemplary initiatives have been replicated.

In sports, for the first time Vietnamese sports led the total medal tally when competing abroad at SEA Games 32, the women's football team made history by qualifying for the first time for the Women's World Cup...

In tourism, in 2023, the total number of international arrivals reached about 12.5 million, achieving the adjusted target. Domestic tourists reached 108 million, exceeding the plan by 5.8%. Total tourism revenue is estimated at 672 trillion VND, exceeding the plan by 3.38%. In 2023, many destinations such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc (Kien Giang), Quang Binh, Hoi An (Quang Nam), Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh)... received international tourism awards.

In 2024, MCST will continue to focus on advising the development of policies to create new momentum for industry development; focus on building highly competitive tourism products in the region; promote domestic and international promotion; coordinate with Dien Bien province to successfully organize the 2024 National Tourism Year. In 2024, the tourism industry aims to welcome 18 million international arrivals, and 110 million domestic arrivals, with total tourism revenue reaching approximately 850 trillion VND.

Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh acknowledged the achievements of the culture, sports and tourism sector over the past year. The Prime Minister directed MCST and localities to focus on mobilizing internal strength based on three main pillars: people, nature, and cultural identity. At the same time, the Prime Minister set out specific tasks and solutions: adhere to the guidelines, policies, and laws of the Party and State in developing the culture, sports and tourism sector; take the initiative to advise on improving mechanisms and policies to invest concentrically, cooperate between the public and private sectors; be proactive, innovative, collaborative across sectors and localities, inter-regional; closely link digital transformation, green transformation, and circular economy in the sustainable development of culture, sports and tourism towards rapid, comprehensive and sustainable development; develop sustainable professional sports; build a clean, strong digital culture; have a breakthrough investment strategy, create new momentum in the industry; invest in human resources; promote internal, regional and national international linkages; build heritage routes of the nation and world heritage; pay attention to gender equality in activities... Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expects that in 2024, the culture, sports and tourism sector will continue to achieve new achievements, contributing to the sustainable development of the country.
