Implementing the national sci-tech program toward Net Zero goal in the Mekong Delta
Date: 12/01/2025

On January 10, in Can Tho City, the Ministry of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Can Tho City and Can Tho University, organized a scientific workshop to implement the national science and technology program aimed at achieving Net Zero emissions in Vietnam, with a focus on the Mekong Delta region.
Workshop Overview

In response to directives from the Party, Government, and Prime Minister, the Ministry of Science and Technology has been working closely with agencies, organizations, scientists, and experts to develop and implement the national science and technology program KC.16/24-30 to support the Net Zero goal. This timely and concrete action demonstrates Vietnam’s commitment to meeting the objectives pledged at COP26.

The KC.16/24-30 program includes key elements such as enhancing legal and policy frameworks for Net Zero; developing green transformation models, circular economies, and green growth; improving human resource quality for Net Zero; reducing emissions across various sectors (transportation, agriculture, etc.); solutions for greenhouse gas inventory, certification, and risk warning.

By 2030, the program aims to provide breakthrough solutions in new technologies across various industries, management mechanisms, technical policies, and improved emission reduction capacity. This initiative supports Vietnam's objective of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat stated that the workshop aims to share information about the national science and technology program aimed at achieving the Net Zero goal. This initiative targets the Mekong Delta region's business community, research institutes, universities, and scientists.

Speaking at the workshop, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat highlighted the importance of the Net Zero science and technology program as a vital foundation for developing innovative solutions. These solutions include carbon capture and storage technologies, greenhouse gas reduction, green transitions, and the advancement of a circular economy. This initiative aims to improve environmental quality and biodiversity conservation while promoting innovation, creating jobs in green technology industries, and enhancing Vietnam’s global competitiveness.

According to Minister Dat, the workshop was organized to disseminate information about the national science and technology program for Net Zero to businesses, research institutes, universities, and scientists in the Mekong Delta region. It also serves as an opportunity for experts, scientists, and local authorities to discuss practical solutions for achieving Net Zero in this critical region, which plays a pivotal role in Vietnam’s socio-economic development but faces significant impacts from climate change.

During the workshop, participants discussed various topics, including directions for implementing science and technology initiatives to achieve Net Zero in the Mekong Delta provinces; innovations toward Net Zero in Can Tho City; policies and legal frameworks for climate change mitigation and achieving Net Zero emissions; circular economy models aligned with Net Zero goals; green transition through Green Hydrogen/Ammonia.

Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee Duong Tan Hien highlighted Can Tho’s efforts under Resolution 59-NQ/TW by the Politburo. The city has been actively collaborating with Mekong Delta provinces on climate adaptation projects, resource and environmental protection, and participating in international programs and conventions on water resources, meteorology, and climate change through project implementation and exchange activities supported by international organizations.

Delegates attending the workshop.

As one of the five cities most heavily affected by climate change, Can Tho is strengthening public awareness and collective action on climate adaptation, disaster prevention, and sustainable resource management. The city prioritizes green transition, low-carbon economic development, circular economy practices, and ecosystem restoration to achieve Net Zero and sustainable development.

Can Tho has also focused on enhancing forecasting and disaster risk mitigation capabilities through science, technology, and innovation. Initiatives include identifying risks such as land subsidence, coastal erosion, sea-level rise, and urban flooding while promoting climate-resilient agriculture and environmental conservation.

Can Tho City is currently collaborating with localities in the Mekong Delta region to implement programs and projects to address climate change and protect regional resources and the environment. Additionally, the city is engaged in international cooperation programs and conventions related to water resources, hydrometeorology, environmental protection, and climate change response. This involvement includes participating in exchange activities and executing initiatives supported by international organizations.

Can Tho City leaders express hope that insights and experiences shared during the workshop will create opportunities for scientists, institutions, and organizations to participate in strategic research and development programs aimed at Net Zero emissions, climate change adaptation, and sustainable economic growth.
