Mekong Delta businesses optimistic about 2024 production and activities

On the afternoon of March 28th, nearly 300 member businesses from 13 provinces in the Mekong Delta region, Ho Chi Minh City, and the southeastern provinces attended the annual member meeting program for 2024, with the theme "Vietnamese Economy 2023 - Recognizing Challenges and Development Prospects from the Impact of the Land Law 2024". The event was organized by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) branch in the Mekong Delta region in Can Tho City.
During the program, new member businesses were presented with certificates.

This annual event organized by VCCI Mekong Delta aims to provide opportunities for meeting, exchanging, and connecting trade and cooperation for all member businesses in the Mekong Delta region.

Attendees included Mr. Duong Tan Hien, Member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Deputy Permanent Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City; Mr. Dau Anh Tuan, Deputy Secretary General and Head of the Legal Department of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI); Associate Professor Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Institute of Economics, member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Team; Dr. Pham Van Vo, Deputy Head of the Commercial Law Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law; Mr. Nguyen Phuong Lam, Director of VCCI branch in the Mekong Delta region; leaders of departments and agencies, experts, scientists, and business associations.

Mr. Duong Tan Hien, Member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Deputy Permanent Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, affirmed that Can Tho City always prioritizes creating a business environment that is open, competitive, convenient, safe, and protects the legitimate rights and interests of businesses.

During the program, the business community received information from experts about the global and Vietnamese economic and political situation in 2023, important forecasts for 2024. They also presented the significant changes in the Land Law 2024 and its impact on the economy, as well as its impact on the business community. Furthermore, the delegates focused on discussing the topic: "Land Law 2024 - Expectations and Preparation of Businesses".

Mr. Duong Tan Hien emphasized that this event addressed the recently enacted Land Law, which is expected to have a significant impact on all businesses in the Mekong Delta region. He highlighted that the city of Can Tho always pays attention to and listens to the issues that the business community is concerned about, and in the process of implementing the Land Law and the development policies for the economy and business in 2024, they will be implemented coherently and effectively with the principle of harmonious benefits and shared risks.

During the event, Mr. Nguyen Phuong Lam, Director of VCCI branch in the Mekong Delta region, also provided preliminary information on the survey results regarding the production and business situation of businesses in 2023 and made forecasts for 2024.

The delegates listened to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Institute of Economics, member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Team, who provided information about the global and Vietnamese economic and political situation in 2023, as well as important forecasts for 2024.

According to Mr. Nguyen Phuong Lam, the most significant challenges that businesses faced in 2023 were the consumption market, followed by political and economic instability, capital sources, personnel, labor, tax, customs, clearance operations, inspections, and licensing procedures required for continued operations...

Regarding the economic development prospects for 2024, Mr. Lam stated that despite the remaining difficulties, businesses in the Mekong Delta region remained optimistic that their production and business activities would improve. Among them, 75.8% of businesses believed that their revenue would increase, and 74.1% expected higher profits and increased employment. However, businesses also forecasted challenges related to input factors, particularly logistics and labor costs, followed by capital sources, fuel prices, informal costs, compliance with administrative procedures, and raw material costs...

The speakers participated in a panel discussion on the impact of the Land Law 2024 on businesses in the Mekong Delta region.

During the meeting, many businesses expressed their desire to receive support from VCCI's Mekong Delta branch, especially in trade promotion activities, investment, partner search, providing information on investment opportunities and business cooperation, business environment updates, specialized training, capital/financial sourcing, legal consultation, policy advisory, business management training, entrepreneurship, and policy advocacy...

On this occasion, VCCI's Mekong Delta branch also awarded certificates to 37 new member businesses.

*On the same morning, in collaboration with GREEN IN Vietnam Joint Stock Company, VCCI's Mekong Delta branch organized a workshop on "Green Transition: Challenges, Opportunities for Mekong Delta Businesses, and Business Support Solutions."

During the workshop, participants focused on discussing topics related to the impact of domestic and international greenhouse gas emission reduction policies on businesses in the Mekong Delta region in the context of climate change; analyzing the current situation of businesses' efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions; challenges and opportunities for Vietnamese businesses, especially those in the Mekong Delta region, in the green transition from an expert perspective; taking advantage of opportunities from the carbon market and carbon emission accounting for businesses in the green transformation trend, meeting international standards... Additionally, participants also discussed the difficulties, challenges, and solutions to support businesses in achieving a rapid and cost-effective green transition.
