According to the Mekong Delta Tourism Association, the tourism sector of the region witnessed positive changes and a strong recovery in 2023. Particularly, The Mekong Delta region welcomed nearly 45 million tourists in 2023, a year-on-year rise of 20.4 percent. International tourists stood at over 1.8 million. Total revenue was estimated at more than VND45.7 trillion ($1.86 billion), which is a significant increase of more than 42% compared to the same period in 2022. This revenue shows an increase of nearly 14% compared to the same period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tourism sector of the Mekong Delta has been working hard to boost collaboration, promotion, and investment in tourism-related activities. Efforts have been focused on developing new products and infrastructure, resulting in significant progress across various localities such as Kien Giang, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, and Vinh Long.

Over the past few years, the Mekong Delta Tourism Association has actively played its role in connecting and supporting various localities for tourism recovery and development. In 2023, the Association welcomed 10 new members, taking the total number of members to 141. Last year, the Association collaborated with localities to organize several survey and appraisal delegations to destinations located in six provinces: An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, Tra Vinh, and Vinh Long. The Association recognized and re-recognized 13 typical tourist destinations in the region in 2023. Currently, there are 53 typical tourist destinations in the Mekong Delta. Additionally, the Association's affiliated units, namely the Mekong Delta Professional Chefs Association and the Mekong Delta Travel Association, arranged many useful activities for members. The Association also organized numerous successful tourism promotion events in markets such as Japan, Da Nang, Lao Cai, and the Central and Northwest regions.

In 2024, the Mekong Delta Tourism Association aims to strengthen linkage and cooperation in tourism development between 13 provinces in the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City, between the Mekong Delta and other regions in Vietnam. The focus will also be on improving the quality of tourist destinations in the Mekong Delta and building typical ones while supporting localities in tourism promotion and other activities. In 2024, the Association will focus on the following markets: Cambodia, Thailand, China, Hanoi, and Quang Ninh.

To boost tourism development in the Mekong Delta region, various solutions have been proposed by the Association, localities, and businesses. These include opening international flights and connecting key tourist areas with the Mekong Delta, developing new inter-line and inter-regional products, focusing on human resource training, organizing local cultural and tourism events to attract more tourists, investing in tourism infrastructure in the Mekong Delta, and enhancing digital transformation in tourism activities.
