OCOP products associated with tourism
Date: 09/07/2023

Developing tourism associated with local specialties and “One Commune, One Product (OCOP)” products is an important solution to effectively develop tourism in the Mekong Delta region. Currently, Can Tho city has 92 OCOP products, of which Thot Not district accounts for 1/3 of the products. In particular, In the Mekong Delta, which produces fruits, rice, and aquatic products with many traditional craft villages, many OCOP products have been recognized and supplied to the domestic and export markets. The region has taken advantage of its natural conditions, agricultural production, culture, and craft villages to create unique tourist destinations.

Speaking of specialties in Thot Not, we must mention famous products such as fermented drinks from water apples and guavas; fish sauce from pangasius, dried pangasius; longan, purple rice, sweet rice paper, etc. These products are being locally oriented to become OCOP products. Mr. Chuong Van Khanh, owner of Ut Anh fish sauce factory, said: "Thot Not is famous for its clean fish rafts that apply advanced farming techniques to improve yield and quality. However, fish breeders often suffer from devaluation. To stabilize the pangasius price, I launched products like pangasius fish sauce and dried pangasius. After that, these were recognized as OCOP products. I also open my factory for tourism and shopping."

Thot Not's OCOP products are mostly associated with tourist attractions. Each garden owner currently has 1-2 OCOP products. This gradually becomes a feature of the people here. Ms. Le Hong Diep, owner of a guava garden, said: “I make fermented guava juice. Initially, it was just to make use of the guavas in my garden to serve visitors. Then the authorities of Thot Not helped me to turn this drink into an OCOP product. Now demand exceeds supply. I want to upgrade my OCOP products from 3 stars to 4 stars”. Meanwhile, Ms. Ha Thi Sau, a household making rice paper in Thuan Hung, spoke to us: “I've been making rice paper for a long time, and sweet rice paper is very popular with tourists, so I was instructed to register it as an OCOP product.” Mr. Huynh Cong Thong, owner of a vineyard, said: “In the near future, I will also register products derived from grapes as OCOP products. If my goods are certified as OCOP products, the quality is guaranteed. Therefore, tourists will be assured of my products while I also have my own specialties."

It can be seen that OCOP products at Thot Not District are very diverse, with fruits, rice, aquatic products, folk cakes, drinks, etc. They are all associated with the life of the people here, creating exciting stories to attract visitors.
