Date: 07/02/2024

Near Tet in 2024, tourist attractions in Can Tho are more bustling as the old Tet atmosphere is carefully preserved for tourists to take photos and learn about the Tet culture typical of the Southwest region.

The Purple House, located at 99 Chi Sinh Street in Tan Phu Ward, Cai Rang District, is a popular destination for visitors in the days leading up to Tet. The space is full of nostalgia, reminiscent of the old Southern region. It is a simple thatched house nestled on the bank of a pond, a monkey bridge, and a wooden boat. In front, there are mounds of straw, pots of Tet cake, and bright apricot flowers. Inside, there are altar cabinets and a kitchen with "old-fashioned" items. Huynh Thi Hong Sen, the owner of the Purple House, said: "With the theme of Tet returning to the roots, we decorate miniature landscapes that are imbued with Vietnamese culture while looking for stickers and objects from past decades in advance to recreate the space of Vietnamese people's old Tet memories. The highlight this time is decorating Tet cake with purple strings with the desire to promote the typical Tet cake of the Southwest region."

The Purple House is a popular tourist destination, especially during Tet. The house is carefully prepared to welcome visitors, and every aspect of it - from the furniture to the space - is meticulously cared for. Duong Thi My Toan, a tourist from Ben Tre, commented on the beauty of the scenery, which is filled with purple colors and Tet flavors. She and her friends visited the house on the days approaching Tet to get some great photos. Currently, the Purple House receives several hundred visitors per day on average, with the highest number on weekends ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 visitors. Walking around, it's easy to spot many groups of graceful tourists wearing ao dai, purple ao ba ba, and wooden clogs, taking charming photos. This place attracts the young, the middle-aged, and families of three to four generations to take photos. Ms. Huynh Thi Ut from Cho Lach, Ben Tre, shared her excitement about the house, saying that every corner of the place is beautiful and purple everywhere. She and her friends arrived early and prepared matching ao dai and conical hats to take photos to preserve their memories together.

Visitors to Son Islet on these days can experience the old Tet atmosphere with the “Old Tet Memories” program. This event recreates the activities that often take place every spring in the villages of the Southwest region. Tourists can join the locals in many activities to prepare for Tet, such as making sweets, wrapping Tet cake, and draining ditches. Bui Thuy Lieu, the owner of Phuong My Grapefruit Garden (Son Islet), said that her house has everything to serve tourists, including coconuts to make candied coconut ribbons, bananas to make banana candy, and grapefruit to make grapefruit jam. The experience gives visitors the feeling of returning to the old countryside, where they can pick fruit, make Tet sweets, and pack Tet cakes. On this occasion, they can gather together to chat and share the joys and sorrows of the past year.

Tourist destinations in Can Tho focus on investing in the old Tet space to attract visitors. One such highlight activity is located at the craft village area in My Khanh Tourist Village (335 Lo Vong, My Khanh commune, Phong Dien district), where visitors can experience making noodles, coconut candy, and Tet jam. Doan Thi Ngoc Hang, who has over 20 years of experience making Tet sweets, says that all the jams sold here are made by hand and follow her grandparents' old ways of making them. They are also made with rock sugar instead of regular sugar, making them healthier and less sweet. Visitors can witness the production of new products every day and even participate in making them. They can then take these products home as souvenirs. Tran Thi Hong Anh, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, enjoyed the jam-making activity and believes that such experiences should be maintained at tourist destinations to promote local customs and craft villages.

Mr. Trinh Van Luan, co-founder of Vo Song Farm located at 45F Truong Vinh Nguyen, Thuong Thanh Ward, Cai Rang District, is preparing for a traditional Southern Tet space. This year, the farm has expanded its planting area to include a variety of flowers such as roses, buckwheat flowers, cosmos flowers, and mustard flowers, as well as rural green vegetable gardens. The development orientation of the farm is to recreate the rural memories of the Southwest, so visitors can experience the river banks, wooden boats, and flower gardens that are reminiscent of a typical Southern village. In addition to vegetables and flowers, Vo Song Farm also grows rice, corn, gourds, melons, and other crops that are typical of the Southern countryside to celebrate Tet.

It is evident that tourist destinations in Can Tho are investing significantly in recreating the traditional Tet atmosphere. They are not only creating miniature landscapes for visitors to take pictures, but also integrating cultural experiences that showcase traditional Tet customs and traditions.
