The 11th Southern Folk Cake Festival takes place next month in Can Tho

On March 4, Can Tho City announced that it would host the 11th Southern Traditional Cake Festival from April 17 to 21, 2024.

This year’s festival will take place from April 17 to 21 (from the 9th to the 13th of the 3rd lunar month) at Binh Thuy District Square, Can Tho City. This is an annual event of Can Tho City to preserve and promote the value of Vietnamese culinary culture and Southern folk cakes. Moreover, the festival is also a rendezvous for businesses and cake makers to exchange experiences and develop folk cake brands. At the same time, it strengthens linkages between provinces and cities in the region and the whole country in trade, tourism, investment, and development of typical Southern cuisine and products.

This year's festival is expected to have a scale of 200-250 booths, including folk cake booths, food booths, OCOP booths, and regional specialties. The Festival is expected to attract 100 artisans to participate in the Folk Cake Contest and demonstrate many types of cakes to serve visitors. There are about 100 types of folk cakes; Many attractive dishes and cuisines along with hundreds of types of regional specialties and OCOP products from across the country are displayed, introduced, and served at the Festival.

The festival is expected to converge about 200 - 250 stalls for displaying and selling Southern folk cakes, OCOP products, regional specialties, machines, auxiliary products for folk cakes, food & drink, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Moreover, over 100 bakers will participate in folk cake making contest and present the making of signature savory and sweet folk cakes such as bánh xèo (sizzling rice crepe), bánh khọt (deep-fried shrimp pancake), bánh ít trần (sticky rice dumpling), and bánh bò (steamed rice cake) for visitors at the festival. The event is a chance for gourmets to enjoy a wide range of local specialties and delicious cakes and performances of traditional cake-making of localities in the country.

The festival is expected to kick off on the evening of April 18 (the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month). The main activities of the festival include incense and cake offering ceremony for Hung Kings, opening ceremony, folk cake-making contest, and closing ceremony. Besides, there are other interesting activities, such as cooking classes for children, folk games, tourism promotion events, and live folk music performances every night. The closing ceremony is scheduled for the evening of April 21.

According to Can Tho Municipal Tourism Development Center, since the Southern Traditional Cake Festival began 10 years ago, it has attracted millions of visitors and has quickly become a favorite destination for people in the region and tourists in and outside the country.

Additionally, the festival also aims to preserve and promote the traditional cuisine culture of the region, as well as building an export strategy to bring traditional cakes to the world market.
