Date: 24/05/2023

On May 19, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City coordinated with the People's Committee of Thot Not District to organize a ceremony to designate the 200-year-old Thuan Hung Rice Paper Village in Thot Not District, Can Tho City as a national intangible cultural heritage. This is the first traditional craft village in Can Tho to receive this privilege.
Can Tho City leaders hand the certificate to a representative of Thuan Hung rice paper village at a ceremony in Thot Not District on May 19, 2023.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Member of Standing Committee of Can Tho City Party Committee, Chairman of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front of Can Tho City, and Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, attended the ceremony.

According to scientific records made by the Museum of Can Tho City, the traditional craft of rice paper making in Thuan Hung was formed around the mid-19th century and was passed down successively for generations. Initially, just a few households were involved. As the dish became more popular, other households get involved. After more than 100 years of existence and development, the profession of rice paper making in Thuan Hung still retains traditional values with profound cultural significance.

Thuan Hung rice paper is made according to a "secret" technique of each household. No two have the same recipe. Each step of making rice paper wrappers requires long experience and precision.

According to statistics, the village is home to 58 rice paper making households. The village generates jobs for over 250 workers with stable incomes. In addition, there are about 30 traditional kilns waiting for the new year to produce. The busiest time of the year is the traditional Lunar New Year when the village households are busy making different kinds of flavored rice paper: plain, salted, sweetened, and coconut.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has decided to add the traditional craft of Thuan Hung rice paper making to the list of Vietnam’s national intangible cultural heritage on March 6, 2023, for its unique cultural values and contribution to the development of the local tourism economy.

On this occasion, the Bank for Social Policies of Thot Not District granted a loan disbursement decision to six families in Thuan Hung Rice Paper Village. Each household is entitled to a loan of 100 million VND to invest in facilities and purchase raw materials.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman Nguyen Ngoc He asked Thot Not district and related departments to continue to promote the heritage of Thuan Hung rice paper making and its products; create favorable conditions for people in Thuan Hung craft village; continue implementing programs to preserve and promote traditional craft villages, widely introduce them to boost their socio-economic benefits. Vice Chairman Nguyen Ngoc He encouraged people in Thuan Hung Rice Paper village to preserve and promote the traditional craft of rice paper making and teach the next generation to further develop Thuan Hung's legacy of making rice paper.
