Vietnam strives to improve its national travel and tourism development capacity at the World Economic Forum (WEF) at least two levels. Vietnam aims to further improve its ranking by at least five levels in the "Priority for tourism and travel" index group and by at least three levels in the "Tourism service infrastructure" index group.
The WEF has designed the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index, which consists of 14 pillars and 90 component indexes. These are divided into four groups: operating environment, policies enabling conditions for tourism development, infrastructure, and tourism resources. According to the WEF report, over the last 12 years (2007-2019), Vietnam's tourism and travel competitiveness index has improved significantly, moving up 24 places from 87th to 63rd globally.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the tourism industry, leading to supply chain disruption, a decline in human resources, and communities losing their livelihoods. As a result, the indexes have also changed.
In 2021, the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index was replaced by the Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) with 17 pillars and 112 indicators, divided into 5 groups.
At the beginning of the year, the Government issued a resolution aimed at improving the TTDI ranking, with a focus on the "Priority for tourism and travel" and "Tourism service infrastructure" groups. This highlights the Government's commitment to developing a sustainable and effective tourism industry in Vietnam and accelerating its recovery.
By 2024, Vietnam aims to welcome 18 million international visitors and 110 million domestic visitors, with a total revenue of approximately 850,000 billion VND.
