Date: 11/06/2021

Tourists often choose to visit top historical-cultural relics, famous architectures on their journey to discover the city of Can Tho and the Western region. However, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the management board and religious officers in the historical-cultural monuments have decided to stop welcoming visitors temporarily and focus on strengthening the COVID-19 prevention and control.
Hoi Linh Pagoda (Binh Thuy District), a National Monument, announced its suspension of religious and belief activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mrs. Truong Thi Chieu's house (in Bui Huu Nghia ward, Binh Thuy district) is near Nam Nha Monastery, a National Monument, so whenever she has free time, she visits the monastery to burn incense and worship Buddha. Recently, Mrs. Chieu has had to stay home because she heard that Nam Nha Monastery was temporarily closed for the COVID-19 prevention and control. Mrs. Chieu said: “I can also burn incense and worship Buddha at home. The pandemic situation is complicated, so each individual has to be aware of it even more to protect oneself and the other.” According to the notice from the Board of Directors of Nam Nha Monastery, the belief establishment will suspend its religious activities and stop receiving visitors from May 31st until there is a new notice from the People's Committee of Can Tho City. Moreover, dignitaries, religious officers, monks, and followers are recommended to not gather in groups of more than 10 people in public places, outside of public offices, schools, and hospitals, and strictly follow the 5K message of the Ministry of Health.

Hiep Thien Cung National Monument, a famous tourist attraction in Cai Rang district, has also announced that it will temporarily stop welcoming visitors to ensure the COVID-19 prevention and control. According to Mr. Do Khen, Deputy Director of the Management Board of Hiep Thien Cung, the site has always strictly complied with COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control policies. However, to ensure the safety of the monument and public health, Hiep Thien Cung has to temporarily suspend operations, waiting for the pandemic to be under control. In addition, Thanh Hoa Temple, a National Monument in Thot Not District, has also issued a notice regarding temporary suspension of receiving visitors to ensure safety.

During the survey at several top historical-cultural relics, famous architectures in Ninh Kieu district like Quang Trieu Hoi Quan or Can Tho Old Market, the COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control measures were carried out proactively before receiving orders from the local authorities. The management board of Quang Trieu Hoi Quan reminded visitors to strictly follow the Ministry of Health’s 5K message (wear medical masks, keep distance, avoid mass gathering, wash hand with sanitizers, conduct health declaration) when visiting the monument through instruction boards and loudspeakers. At the Can Tho Old Market, the management board also reminded people to strictly follow the Ministry of Health’s 5K message and recommended people not go to the market when having signs of cough, fever, sore throat, headache, etc. Ms. Lu Thi Xieu, a trader near Can Tho Old Market, said: “Since the fourth wave of COVID-19 pandemic at the end of April until now, the market is quite sparse and the number of visitors is also meager. However, the pandemic prevention and control measures at the market are strictly implemented, market-goers and small traders comply well with it.

Binh Thuy District has 8 ranked monuments, including 7 national sites and 1 municipal site. Due to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of visitors to these monuments decreased by 80%-90% compared to the same period last year. Ms. Phan Thi Nguyet, Standing Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Thuy District, said: “As for the relics that are not religious establishments, they are still open because there has not been a temporary closure instruction from the municipal authorities. However, due to the complicated situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the management board, dignitaries, religious officers of the monuments in the district have all strengthened prevention and control measures. For example, at Binh Thuy Temple, a National Monument, the management board placed a notice board outside the Temple’s gate to remind visitors to strictly follow the Ministry of Health’s 5K message (wear medical masks, keep distance, avoid mass gathering, wash hand with sanitizers, conduct health declaration). Under the direction of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, the People's Committee of Binh Thuy District has directed the District’s Department of Home Affairs to inspect the temporary suspension of receiving visitors in several National Monuments such as Hoi Linh Pagoda, Long Quang Pagoda, Nam Nha Monastery as well as all religious establishments in the area. As a result, all the monuments, historical-cultural sites, temples, monasteries, pagodas.. followed the directive very well. The COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control at religious establishments in the area is also ensured”.

Ms. Dao Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho city, said: “We has just sent an official letter to other departments, affiliated units, the districts’ department of culture and information, the People's Committees of communes, wards, and enterprises working in the hospitality and culture industry on implementing the COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control measures. Accordingly, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho city requires relevant organizations and units to strictly follow the directives and instructions of their superiors and professional sectors on ensuring the COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control measures. We also assigned our inspectors to assume the prime responsibility and coordinate with relevant units to regularly inspect and supervise the implementation of COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control and strictly handle violations according to regulations”.
