O Mon District

O Mon District is an inner district of Can Tho City (established on the basis of dividing O Mon District into O Mon District and Co Do District under Decree 05/2004/ND-CP of the Government). With the area of 13,222 hectares, the district now has a population of 133,297 people (66, 625 of whom are female), in which 1,072 households of 4,985 people are Khmer; 384 households of 1,990 people are Chinese, and 6 households of 17 people belong to other minorities.

Regarding its geographical location: in the north O Mon District borders Thot Not District, in the south Binh Thuy District, in the south Phong Dien District, in the east Hau River, which separates the city from Vinh Long Province and Dong Thap Province, in the west Thoi Lai District and Co Do district .

In terms of administrative units, there are 7 wards in the district :

- Chau Van Liem Ward: originated from O Mon Town, total area: 881 hectares; population: 23,398 people.

- Thoi Hoa Ward (separated from Chau Van Liem Ward under Decree No. 11/2007/ND-CP dated 16 January 01, 2007 of the Government) : area : 743 hectares; population: 7,238 people.

- An Thoi Ward: area: 2,489 hectares; population: 26,135 people.

- Phuoc Thoi Ward: area: 2,826 hectares; population: 26 593 people.

- Truong Lac Ward: area: 2,420 hectares; population: 16,690 people.

- Thoi Long Ward: area: 2,047 hectares; population: 19,445 people.

- Long Hung Ward ( separated from Thoi Long Ward under Decree No. 162/2007/ND-CP November 6, 2007 of the Government ): area: 1,815 hectares; population: 13,818 people.

 

O Mon District is 21 km from Ninh Kieu District (i.e Can Tho City center), so the development of the technical infrastructure of the city has certain positive impact on promoting the economy - society of O Mon District. Besides, the district also has a number of favorable conditions as follows:

Regarding road traffic, across O Mon are National Highway 91, National Highway 1A connecting National Highway 91B of over 20 km long. Also, from National Highway 91, 4 provincial roads are leading to many directions ;

In terms of waterways, 15 km of Hau River runs through the district, the large ships can travel to Can Tho Port, Cai Cui Port easily. In general, it is easy to transport from O Mon to Ho Chi Minh City, neighboring provinces and Cambodia . In addition, in here, O Mon River serves as a hub for easy transport to other provinces such as Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau. The district also has a system of interlacing canals like Tac Ong Thuc, Ba Rich, Cam My, Ba Su, Tam Vu, Bang Tang…., which is convenient for travelling. Southern Electrical Engineering and Agriculture College located in Phuoc Thoi Ward attracts thousands of students from all over the region every year.

In terms of its industrial production,  businesses and factories have been operating well in O Mon District including Tay Do Cement Plant, Pesticide Plant, Tay Do Garment Factory, Zincography Plant and other high capacity factories. Also, there are more than 5,191 large- and small- scaled businesses of handicraft, service, trade whose products and services include ships, boats, wooden utensils, mechanical repair, food production, food processing, ...

Land in O Mon District is good for the development of agriculture, especially rice. Its scenery is beautiful. Wards like Thoi Long, An Thoi, Truong Lac are well-known for lush orchards in all four seasons. Annual rice output has increased steadily and maintained at above 92 thousand tons, with an average yield of 4.93 tons/ ha/year. The total crop area is of over 1,766 hectares annually, focusing on those plants suitable for high yield, stable markets such as soya, sesame, maize, green beans , ... Orchards of regional specialties are over 2,500 hectares, providing an annual output of 25,000 tons of fruit and these orchards can served the development of eco-tourism well. The wards along Hau River  like Phuoc Thoi, Thoi An, Thoi Long have conditions for aquaculture development with different types of fish such as goby, unisexual tilapia, tilapia, shrimp with an output of about 50,000 tons/year.

O Mon - a land of rich cultural traditions- has the convergence of famous historical sites such as the Pothisomron Pagoda, Thoi An Temple, Linh Son Ancient Temple…

O Mon is home to many celebrities such as Chau Van Liem - a participant in the establishment of the Communist Party of Vietnam; musicians Luu Huu Phuoc, Tran Kiet Tuong, Dac Nhan, Trieu Dan ...

 

 

The whole district has 37 schools and colleges, including 10 accredited schools that meet national standards. 83/83 areas meet the criteria for cultural areas and 04/07 wards are recognized as cultural wards (Truong Lac, Thoi Long, Long Hung, and Thoi Hoa).

O Mon District has continued to have sustainable development contributing to the achievements in renewal process of our country due to its glorious revolutionary tradition, its people of great patriotism and diligence, its potential economy and abundant labor force, as well as Party and people’s unity, dynamic, creativeness, brevity, efforts to overcome difficulties and challenges./.
