Professor Luu Huu Phuoc - a composer and a member of the National Assembly – was the pioneer in introducing music to our struggle for national independence and freedom. He contributed hundreds of songs and musical plays to the musical treasures of Vietnam. These works conveyed the spirit of revolutionary optimism, the will to assault the enemy, the national patriotism and the inspirations of an artist and soldier. His typical works were Len dang (To start out), Ca ngoi Ho Chu Tich (In Praise of President Ho), Hon tu si (Martyrs’ Souls), Thieu nu Viet Nam (Vietnamese Lady), Giai phong Viet Nam (Liberating Viet Nam), Khuc khai hoan ca (the Triumphal Song), ...
Besides the well-known musical works, Composer Luu Huu Phuoc contributed greatly to the musical leadership and management. As Manager of Music and Dance Department, he advocated the policy on national music reserve and development in musical schools as well as in cultural and artistic troupes. When he was Director of the Institute of Music and Dance, he was devoted himself in building the institute to be a closed model of various activities from musical collection and exploitation to research and teaching, composing, performing, ... Musician Luu Huu Phuoc was also accredited with the establishment of the first symphony orchestra in Vietnam as well as the organization and construction of the first theater for symphony, chorus and musical play in Vietnam.
In the field of music criticism, he focused on the following topics: the inherit and development of traditional music resources of the nation, the modern national trend in music, the establishment of mass cultural and musical movements….. In the revolutionary struggle, he adopted a tough stance of music: "Music is a weapon in the national revolutionary struggle. Writing music is to serve the Fatherland." His views in musical activities and in composing were to fight against the music which was anti-revolutionary, debauchery, exotic. He strongly supported the development of the socialist music imbued with national identity.
To express our respect and acknowledge the valuable contribution of Composer Luu Huu Phuoc to the cause of Vietnamese revolution and music, the Party and State awarded him many honors, including Huan chuong Doc lap hang nhat (The First Independence Medal) and Giai thuong Ho Chi Minh (Ho Chi Minh Award) on October 1996. He died on June 9th 1989 in Ho Chi Minh City.
To show our gratitude for his previous contributions, a park in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City of 20,055 m² was named after Luu Huu Phuoc. This park has attracted many local people to come for entertainment. Also a senior high school in O Mon District, Can Tho City was named after him: Luu Huu Phuoc Senior High School.
