Can Tho City leader received a delegation from the British Council in Vietnam

On May 15, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien along with representatives of relevant departments and agencies had a working session with Director of the British Council in Vietnam Donna McGowan, and her delegation on launching a program on climate skills in a bid to promote green transition.

During the meeting, Director of the British Council in Vietnam Donna McGowan presented the British Council's partnership programs in Vietnam, with a focus on initiatives to support the transition to green practices and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. She said that these programs aimed to equip vulnerable young people with the necessary skills to be able to participate in and be part of the green transition process and a low carbon economy. It will also provide necessary resources, build community activities led by young people, remove barriers, and help them get closer to green jobs.

Director of the British Council in Vietnam Donna McGowan also expressed interest in expanding collaboration on climate change efforts between the UK and Can Tho City. She said that participating British and Vietnamese experts will help promote the role of education in climate change adaptation, addressing the impacts and effects of climate change in the Mekong Delta region. This will also create opportunities for young people to connect with experts and policymakers, thereby contributing their voices to the country's macro decisions in the field of climate and green transition, McGowan added.

In response, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien expressed the city's keen interest in the "Climate Skills - Seeds for Green Transformation" program organized by the British Council and the Can Tho University. He mentioned that the program provides young people with the necessary resources to develop green skills and knowledge to address climate change, thereby promoting green transformation.

Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien expressed his hope that the council will continue supporting the city in implementing projects to raise the community’s climate change response capacity.

The official also hopes that the British Council, the British Embassy, and other British NGOs will continue to support Can Tho in environmental protection and climate change adaptation. This includes supporting Can Tho City to implement initiatives and pilot models to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural and industrial production, as well as supporting Can Tho and British businesses to implement cooperation and exchange activities related to environmentally friendly technology. Additionally, they should consider giving priority to implementing green carbon assessment research projects with Can Tho city, helping the city achieve its goal of being an ecological city imbued with the river cultural identity of the Mekong Delta.

Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien is confident that the working session between Can Tho City and the British Council in Vietnam will enhance mutual understanding and trust, laying the foundation for the two sides to collaborate on projects in the near future.
