
At the meeting, Vice Chairman Nguyen Van Hong welcomed US Consulate General Susan Burn to Can Tho city, and said that Can Tho constantly strives to expand cooperation with domestic and foreign partners, especially the United States.
Vice Chairman Nguyen Van Hong also highly appreciated the cooperation relationship in the fields of health, agriculture, education, and training between the two sides as Can Tho city signed a cooperation agreement with Riverside City in 2015, in the US state of California. Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding on promoting trade and investment cooperation was signed between the two cities, opening up great trade and economic cooperation opportunities for the Mekong Delta region.
In order to strengthen the cooperation relationship between Can Tho city and the United States, Vice Chairman Nguyen Van Hong hoped that US Consulate General Susan Burns would act as a bridge to introduce Can Tho city to US businesses regarding the city's strengths, potential, policies to attract investors and assist Can Tho in providing information on US businesses' strengths, markets, and trade barriers as well as their culture and business experience.
In addition, he stated that Can Tho city encourages the implementation of US programs and projects in Can Tho city and the enhancement of regular cooperation between the two sides. It is also necessary to organize US business delegations to visit and learn about investment and trade promotion opportunities in Can Tho City. Thereby, businesses in the Mekong Delta will have the opportunity to call on US businesses' investment in large projects in Can Tho city, with emphasis on the fields of logistics, information technology, education - training, and tourism.
Vice Chairman Nguyen Van Hong also asked the United States to grant more scholarships and provide related information for eligible students, teachers, and civil servants from Can Tho to further their study and research in the North American nation.
US Consul General Susan Burns highly valued the strong cooperative relationship between Can Tho City and US partners over the past few years, namely between Can Tho City and Riverside City. US Consul General Susan Burns said in addition to promoting trade and people-to-people diplomacy, she will make efforts to help Vietnam realize its climate change and clean energy targets. US Consul General added that she would continue to introduce US businesses to invest in Can Tho in the fields of processing, infrastructure, renewable energy, healthcare, climate change response, education and training… She also hoped that more and more US businesses would come to Can Tho city for investment cooperation opportunities.
The diplomat unveiled that the US will also launch many undergraduate and graduate programs in the city and expand related programs and the exchange of students between Can Tho and leading US universities.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs of Can Tho city, in the first ten months of 2022, Can Tho earned 147.67 million USD from exports to the US, mainly rice, fishery products, farm produce, processed agricultural products, apparel, handicrafts, Iron and Steel Products. Meanwhile, its imports from the US stood at 1.69 million USD, mainly medicinal materials, agricultural pharmaceuticals, and veterinary medicine.
Can Tho city is currently deploying 3 projects with direct investment capital from the United States, including the project of designing and manufacturing machines for industrial and agricultural production, with a registered investment capital of nearly 667 thousand USD; the Cargill Vietnam Co., Ltd. Branch project in Can Tho, with a registered investment capital of 8 million USD; the 20,000 MT Animal and Vegetable Oil Export Project, with a registered investment capital of 900,000 USD.
