In 2007, the staff of Can Tho City Museum developed a program to educate students about traditions and cultural heritage. The program was well-received by schools. During the flag-raising ceremony every Monday, Can Tho City Museum staff informed students about essential holidays, anniversaries, and local historical and cultural traditions.
The schools that have participated in the program since its inception and have maintained it until now are Nguyen Viet Hong High School and Huynh Thuc Khang Middle School (Ninh Kieu District). In 2008, the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism advocated implementing activities to introduce heritage and traditions to students. From this impetus, the Culture and Education sectors of Can Tho City have coordinated smoothly, developing the educational program on traditions and cultural heritage in schools and making it a bright spot.
Can Tho City Museum not only engages in direct propaganda at schools but also develops numerous educational and experiential programs for students. These programs include "History Lesson at the Museum," "A Day as a Farmer," "I Practice Being a Museum Guide," "I Become an Artisan," "Learning with Artisans," "Summer Fun Learning History," "Fun Learning Vietnamese History," "School Youth Looking Back to the Homeland's Islands," and "Proud of Can Tho People." Each program represents the museum's efforts to promote national pride. Importantly, every participating student gains a lasting memory and a positive impression of their homeland and country.
Mrs. Nguyen Le Thu Thuan, Principal of Tran Hung Dao Secondary School (Ninh Kieu District), emphasized the significance of extracurricular activities and experiences in students' overall education and teaching. She highlighted the importance of experiential activities outside the school campus, particularly trips to learn about relics and heritage, in enhancing the quality of the primary curriculum. Can Tho City Museum and the school have collaborated to innovate the content of experiential trips, making the museum an engaging and beneficial "experiential education" space for students.
Mr. Nguyen Duy Linh, Vice Principal of Thoi Long High School in O Mon District, shared that the school has closely coordinated with Can Tho City Museum to organize various exciting and meaningful student activities. Some notable 2023-2024 school year activities included a program focused on “Teacher Chau Van Liem,” campaigns highlighting "General Vo Nguyen Giap," celebrations for Student Day, and an inspirational story about Heroic Martyr Tran Van On. Additionally, students participated in an activity centered around "Some Vietnamese New Year customs" and an exchange program themed "Can Tho - Small Stories."
“In particular, the "Proud of Can Tho People" program implemented by Can Tho City Museum at the school has helped students to understand the criteria for family behavior better and the six standards for building Can Tho People attractive and effective communication," said Mr. Linh.
Mrs. Trinh Thi Nhung, Principal of Binh Thuy Primary School (Binh Thuy District), said, “During the flag-raising ceremony, the students are enthusiastic about learning local history, significant anniversaries, and major holidays. This helps them to understand and appreciate the valuable traditions of their ancestors. In the upcoming school years, the school will continue collaborating with the Can Tho City Museum staff to organize practical activities, such as the "Spring Colors of the Garden" experience program for the students.”
The Can Tho City Museum leaders have announced that the Museum has signed a cooperation agreement with 36 schools in 9 districts for the 2023-2024 school year. The agreement aims to promote traditional education, raise awareness about national holidays, celebrate cultural celebrities and national heroes, and highlight local cultural heritage, such as street names. Can Tho City Museum has welcomed nearly 35,000 visitors, including 139 school visits (221 groups) in Can Tho City. Notably, relics, cultural works, and memorials to famous individuals have attracted many student visitors. These numbers indicate the positive impact of traditional education and cultural heritage within schools.
In the 2024-2025 school year, the Culture and Education sectors of Can Tho City have identified the theme as "Digitalization in bringing cultural heritage to the younger generation." Consequently, specialized agencies actively promote the digitization of promotional content, applying digital technology to heritage promotion activities and models.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Director of Can Tho Municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has requested Can Tho City Museum to proactively coordinate with schools in suburban districts far from the city center. This is intended to spread the museum's work more widely. Additionally, efforts should be made to promote the museum through its website and digital applications. Research and investment are needed to create new, attractive, age-appropriate programs that engage students in interactive and educational activities. The goal is to encourage students to "learn while playing."
