
According to the Notice No. 203/TB-VPCP dated April 25th, 2025 of the Government Office on the conclusion of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during his working trip and meeting with ministries and localities on the situation of investment in the development of transport infrastructure system in the Mekong Delta region, in Section II, Clause 3 states: “Request Saigon Newport Corporation, Vietnam Maritime Corporation to study the plan to establish a joint-stock company to strengthen the linkage and cooperation in logistics services in the Cai Cui port area, on that basis, the Ministry of Construction shall preside over and coordinate with the People's Committee of Can Tho and the two corporations to report to Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha for a meeting to agree, decide and report to the Prime Minister before May 31th, 2025”.
According to the report of Can Tho Department of Construction, Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company (a subsidiary of Vietnam Maritime Corporation) is operating Cai Cui Port with 2 wharves, a total length of 365m, receiving ships of up to 20,000DWT, warehouse area behind the port of 25ha. The function is a general port, container, designed capacity according to the current status of 4.3 million tons of goods/year, mainly fertilizers, finished iron and steel products, imported wood, distribution of motorcycles of Honda Vietnam, equipment for large traffic and electricity projects in the Mekong Delta region.
Tan Cang Waterway Transport Joint Stock Company (a subsidiary of Saigon Newport Corporation) operates Tan Cui Port with a wharf of 180m in length, receiving ships of up to 20,000DWT, the area of warehouse land behind the port is 8ha. The function is a general port, container, designed capacity according to the status quo is 2.44 million tons of goods/year, mainly general goods, containers.

At the meeting, the leaders of the two above-mentioned units briefly informed about the situation of port exploitation and service business; mentioned some difficulties due to the Dinh An - Can Tho shipping channel often being silted, which does not ensure large tonnage ships to operate, and expressed the desire to promote logistics development, exploiting the maximum potential and advantages of this important shipping route.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen - Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee - appreciated the positive contributions of the two units in investing in the development of port infrastructure and services in Can Tho city in the recent time, and affirmed that the dredging combined with recovering products of Dinh An - Can Tho maritime channel for large tonnage ships entering and leaving Can Tho city ports and other ports in the region is extremely necessary, helping to promote the efficiency of exploitation and increase the capacity of ports in the region. The Chairman of the City People’s Committee also said that if the seaport system is well invested and meets the demand, private enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises of the city will benefit, creating a driving force to promote the economy development of the city and the region.
On the basis of receiving the recommendations and proposals of the two units, the Chairman of the City People’s Committee asked the relevant departments to provide more information on legality, current status and planning orientation for the two corporations, and at the same time assigned the Department of Construction to urgently synthesize and report to the Ministry of Construction and the Deputy Prime Minister.
