Can Tho announces completion of plan to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated housing
Date: 24/04/2025

On April 24, the Steering Committee for the elimination of makeshift and dilapidated housing in Can Tho City held a ceremony to announce the successful completion of its plan in response to the emulation movement “Joining Hands to Eliminate Makeshift and Dilapidated Housing in Can Tho City in 2025.”

Attending the ceremony were Mr. Do Thanh Binh, Member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee; Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee; Mr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Can Tho City; along with leaders of various municipal departments, sectors, and localities.

Over the years, the Party Committee and government of Can Tho City have paid special attention to local people's lives, employment, and housing conditions, particularly policy beneficiaries, poor households, and near-poor households. In response to the emulation movement “Joining Hands to Eliminate Makeshift and Dilapidated Housing” launched by the Prime Minister, the city has implemented the plan with firm determination and urgency.

From August 2024 to April 20, 2025, the city completed constructing and repairing 1,066 houses that met the required standards. Among them were 125 homes for revolutionary contributors (68 newly built and 57 repaired) and 941 homes for poor and near-poor households (787 newly built and 154 repaired). All homes have been handed over and put into use, achieving a 100% completion rate.

Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee Truong Canh Tuyen delivered a speech at the ceremony.

In 2024 alone, the city built, repaired, and handed over 535 houses. In 2025, another 531 houses were approved, completed, and handed over—406 for poor and near-poor households and 125 for revolutionary contributors—ensuring timely delivery to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025).

The total budget for the plan to eliminate makeshift and dilapidated housing in the city exceeded VND 61 billion. Of this, more than VND 16 billion came from a 5% saving on regular expenses in 2024 as stipulated by Resolution No. 159/2024/QH15 and Decision No. 559/QD-TTg dated March 10, 2025; over VND 1.5 billion was sourced from the central government budget; over VND 40.6 billion from socialized resources; and over VND 3 billion from household contributions. Additionally, the city mobilized more than 2,500 labor days to support construction efforts.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee, emphasized: “The elimination of makeshift and dilapidated housing for poor, near-poor, and revolutionary contributor households is a profoundly humane initiative that reflects our gratitude and practical care for people’s lives. These new houses are not just places to live—they are starting points and sources of motivation for families to work, study, and escape poverty sustainably.”

He further affirmed that eliminating makeshift housing is not only a short-term task but also a long-term responsibility. In the coming time, the city will continue strengthening housing support policies, mobilizing resources more effectively, and expanding flexible and suitable support mechanisms. The program will be integrated with other initiatives such as building new-style rural areas and civilized urban zones. Periodic reviews and summaries will be conducted to commend effective models and remove obstacles in the implementation process.
