Can Tho City and Canada enhance cooperation

On November 22, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien held a reception for a delegation from the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City led by Canadian Consul General Annie Dubé.

At the reception, Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien briefed the guests on the city's socio-economic development, highlighting its strengths, potential, and development orientations to 2030 with a vision to 2045. In the first nine months of this year, the export turnover of goods from the city to Canada reached 4.18 million USD with main exports of rice, aquaculture products, garments, agricultural products processed agricultural products, steel, and steel products.

Can Tho City has maintained a strong cooperative relationship with the Canadian diplomatic representative agency in Vietnam. The city has repeatedly welcomed the Canadian Ambassador and Consul General for visits and collaboration. The two sides worked together to organize events in Can Tho City to celebrate the 40th, 45th, and 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada. Additionally, from 2017 to 2020, Can Tho City participated in the Partnerships for Municipal Innovation - Local Economic Development (PMI-LED) Program. This program was created as a result of cooperation between the Canadian Urban Federation and the Vietnam Urban Federation.

Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien said Can Tho City hopes to join in the strengthening of the relationship between Vietnam and Canada in the coming time and wishes the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City will create favorable conditions for the city to establish relationships and cooperate with Canadian partners and organizations to develop areas such as trade, services, and processing industry, gender equality, community development, etc.

On behalf of Can Tho City’s leaders, Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien invited the delegation from the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City to attend a celebration to mark the 20th anniversary of Can Tho becoming a central-level city.

Canadian Consul General in HCM City Annie Dubé expressed her excitement for the increasingly developing relationship between Canada and Vietnam and thanked the leaders of Can Tho City for the warm welcome. She said Vietnam is Canada's top trading partner in ASEAN, adding Canada will export many goods to Vietnam in the time to come.

Canada has supported projects consistent with Vietnam's priority areas such as climate change and environmental protection, she said and highlighted that Canada also prioritizes support for education, gender equality, and empowerment of women

Canadian Consul General in HCM City Annie Dubé also mentioned that there are currently around 16,000 Vietnamese students studying in Canada. Additionally, she stated that there are approximately 275,000 Canadians of Vietnamese descent living in Canada who have been actively working towards strengthening the positive relationship between the two nations.

The same day, the diplomat and leaders of Can Tho city planted trees at a local park on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Canada.
