According to the representative of the JICA Study Team, JICA is supporting the Ministry of Transport with the survey and study of the Dai Ngai Bridge (phase 1) and other major road and bridge projects that play a significant role in the Mekong Delta’s development and would use the Japanese ODA. As for the project of Dai Ngai bridge (connecting the two localities of Soc Trang and Tra Vinh), the team needs information related to the current socio-economic status, regional transport planning of Can Tho city. Subsequently, the team will evaluate the influence of Dai Ngai Bridge on traffic in the Mekong Delta region. Another project is the O Mon Bridge linking Can Tho with Kien Giang, Vinh Long, and Dong Thap, and the other is the western belt route. The O Mon Bridge, worth about 10 trillion VND (436.68 million USD), has been included in the Mekong Delta development planning scheme approved by the Prime Minister. In addition, JICA Study Team also wishes to work with localities in the Mekong Delta on potential cooperation projects between Vietnam and Japan in the near future.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho city said: “Over the past time, Can Tho city has planned traffic projects associated with projects of the Ministry of Transport in the city. The two above-said projects are expected to contribute to local socio-economic development and connectivity between Can Tho and other localities in the Mekong Delta. Therefore, Can Tho city will support and create the most favorable conditions for the JICA Study Team to study the Dai Ngai bridge project and traffic projects in the city. Furthermore, Vice Chairman Nguyen Ngoc He assigned the Transport Department and other relevant departments and agencies to provide information about major projects in Can Tho, as well as the possible utilization of Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) in the city, according to the official.
