Date: 19/05/2024

On May 15, the British Council in Vietnam coordinated with Can Tho University to launch the “Climate Skills - Seeds for Transition” project.
Experts from Can Tho University presented the current state of climate change in the Mekong Delta at the event.

“Climate Skills - Seeds for Transition” program, coordinated by the British Council with global youths, to equip vulnerable young people with the necessary skills to be able to participate in and be part of the green transition process and a low carbon economy.

According to Prof. Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai - Vice Principal of Can Tho University, the project aimed to promote green transition and reduce the use of fossil fuels. Moreover, it is implemented in six countries, including the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, and India.

In Vietnam, the British Council will cooperate with the Research Institute for Climate Change, Can Tho University (referred to as DRAGON-Mekong) to deploy the “Climate Skills - Seeds for Transition” program in 3 localities in the Mekong Delta including Can Tho City and Kien Giang and Soc Trang provinces. The project has the participation of 2,000 vulnerable young people, along with 300 British and Vietnamese experts to help promote the role of education in climate change adaptation, addressing the impacts and effects of climate change in the Mekong Delta region.

The project will create opportunities for young people to connect with experts and policymakers, thereby contributing their voices to the country's macro decisions in the field of climate and green transition.

At the launching ceremony, Donna McGowan, Director of the British Council in Vietnam, expressed her excitement when the “Climate Skills - Seeds for Transition” program is implemented in Vietnam, particularly in the Mekong Delta.

According to Donna McGowan, the Mekong Delta is heavily affected by the negative impacts of climate change, such as floods, droughts, saltwater intrusion due to rising sea levels, and erosion of river banks. Therefore, the “Climate Skills - Seeds for Transition” program will help promote international cooperation in addressing the impacts of climate change in the Mekong Delta region, with the participation of British and Vietnamese experts.

“Through the project, we will also apply our experience in promoting the role of education in climate change by bringing people together to share their ideas and experiences about climate change, and then learn from each other,” added Ms. Donna McGowan.

As a strategic partner in the program, Prof. Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai - Vice Principal of Can Tho University, believes in the success of the project with the participation of Can Tho University and relevant parties such as the Youth Union, Women's Union, departments, businesses, non-governmental organizations, along with the support of the British Council in Vietnam. This partnership is an important foundation to help the Mekong Delta Long become a better living place.
