Maintain economic growth, accelerate public investment disbursement
Date: 06/06/2025

On June 5, Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee Truong Canh Tuyen chaired the city’s regular online meeting for May to hear reports on the socio-economic situation during the month and in the first five months of 2025.
Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Truong Canh Tuyen gave a directive speech at the meeting.

Also attending the meeting were Mr. Duong Tan Hien, Member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee and Standing Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee; Mr. Dao Chi Nghia, Deputy Head of the Delegation of National Assembly Deputies of Can Tho City; Mr. Nguyen Thuc Hien, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee; members of the municipal People’s Committee; and leaders of departments, sectors, and district-level People’s Committees.

At the meeting, after listening to reports from departments and sectors and discussion contributions from delegates, Chairman Truong Canh Tuyen assessed that, although investment attraction remained modest, the city’s socio-economic indicators in May and over the first five months of 2025 continued to show positive growth. Industrial production increased by over 6%; notably, the trade and services sector accounted for over 53% of the economic structure. Total retail sales of goods and services rose by more than 13%; import-export turnover increased by over 10%; and tourism revenue jumped by more than 20% compared to last year.

Delegates participated in the discussion at the meeting.

In addition, state budget revenue across the city was highly encouraging, reaching VND 6,032 billion by the end of May, equivalent to nearly 50% of the year’s target. Business development in May also outperformed April, with the cumulative number of newly registered and reactivated enterprises almost doubling the number of those that ceased operation. Agricultural production remained stable and continued to develop, particularly with the implementation of the one-million-hectare project and the large-scale field model showing consistent progress. Moreover, the city effectively implemented social welfare policies during the period, including the eradication of temporary and dilapidated housing. Cultural and festival activities were vibrant, received positive public feedback, and attracted large numbers of visitors. Administrative reform and digital transformation also saw positive developments.

According to Mr. Tuyen, restructuring the administrative apparatus at the provincial level and the construction of the local government system are progressing according to plan.

Delegates participated in the discussion at the meeting.

However, the Chairman also pointed out persistent shortcomings, particularly the low disbursement rate of public investment capital. He stressed the need for a thorough assessment of both objective and subjective causes, with a focus on the accountability of the officials in charge.

He emphasized that the upcoming tasks are urgent, continuous, and in many cases unprecedented, requiring a process of doing, learning, and drawing lessons simultaneously, while still maintaining economic growth at 8% or higher.

On this basis, the Chairman instructed all departments and sectors to urgently review their assigned tasks and targets under the Resolutions of the People’s Council and decisions of the City People’s Committee, as well as to develop effective implementation strategies. He also called for a continued review of the tasks related to the restructuring of provincial-level administrative units to ensure completion by June 10; focused efforts on accelerating public investment disbursement; strengthened measures to boost budget revenue; and swift preparation and submission of plans to implement Resolution No. 59-NQ/TW on international integration in the new context, Resolution No. 66-NQ/TW on reforming the development and implementation of laws to meet national development needs in the new era, and Resolution No. 68-NQ/TW dated May 4, 2025 of the Politburo on the development of the private economy.

Furthermore, departments and sectors must continue enhancing digital transformation efforts, with special attention to digitizing and archiving documents during the process of merging and restructuring agencies. Efforts should also be made to ensure the quality and timely completion of reports and proposals to be submitted to the mid-year session of the City People’s Council in 2025.
