Southern Traditional Cake Festival: Can Tho’s unique feature

On February 14th , Mr. Le Van Tam - Permanent Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City hold a meeting in the city with relevant agencies for the preparation of the sixth Southern Traditional Cake Festival in 2007.

A new feature of this year’s festival is that this is the first time we clearly identify the culture value of Southern traditional cakes through three cultural elements; namely “baking, selling and  enjoying cakes”.

The Sixth Southern Traditional Cake Festival will take place from April 5th  to April 9th (ie from the 9th  to the 13th of  lunar March - coincides with the death anniversary of Hung Kings on the 10th of lunar March) at The Investment Trade Tourism Promotion Center and The International Exhibition Fair Center in Can Tho city. The festival has around 200 booths among which 100 booths will introduce traditional cakes of the southern region, the remaining will be specialties from other regions and foreign countries for traditional cakes.As many as 200 booths will be set up, while feature and industrial products supporting traditional cakes.

Target participants are craftmen, traditional bakeries in the whole country; manufacturing enterprises and businesses selling supporting industrial products for traditional cakes; Southern cuisine specialties businesses; craftmen and enterprises in foreign countries.

In the framework of the festival, many activities will take place including: performing art of baking and serving traditional cakes, cake making contest for local people, folk games, traditional music, conferences, seminars and so on.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman Le Van Tam emphasized that this festival is not just a regional scale festival bringing distinctive brand for Can Tho. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Affairs said that the city must preserve and upgrade in order to tie to tourism development by the festival. Therefore, the relevant units should promote the dissemination and  the image to attract local and foreign visitors to the festival. At the same time, Vice Chairman suggested the members of the Organizing Committee to coordinate closely with the relevant departments to control the origin and quality of food of the units involved; ensure the logistics of transportation, lodging and the like; for visitors to be stable; make sure to prevent the price hikes, unsafe food during the festival; prepare facilities well; and ensure security to make sure the festival is a success; focusing on introducing specialty cakes of local.
