Attending the ceremony were representatives of leaders of  Municipal Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee, Vietnam Fatherland Front, Party Boards, Departments, Divisions, Boards and Unions of Can Tho city, the Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion Center in provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta, lecturers and students of  French Department of Can Tho Universities, Ho Chi Minh City University of Pedagogy, Universities of Tien Giang, Bac Lieu, Dong Thap and Can Tho College as well as more than 700 teachers, pupils in other French teaching schools of the Mekong Delta.

The Francophone Day, is an annual event, was organized in turn by provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta and by Can Tho city in 2017. This activity aims to celebrate the French International Day on 20th the March and to encourage the movement of teaching and using French as well as to promote the cooperation with Francophone partners in Viet Nam.

The 20th Francophone Day of the Mekong Delta took place within 2 days, from 11th to 12th the March. Through the exchange activities in this day, the cooperation program of developing Francophone community in the Mekong Delta was promoted effectively, tightening the solidarity and friendship in the field of culture and education and contributing the cooperation strategy of development between Viet Nam and France.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dung, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee, said that Can Tho city always appreciates the establishment and development of  the friendship with Francophone partners. In the past few years, the city has always maintained a French teaching program in the schools and enhanced professional training courses, especially the skills for students learning French. Also, some supporting programs from the OIF have practical effects in the development and expansion of Francophone activities in the city.

The 20th Francophone Day of the Mekong Delta took place with many exciting activities like eloquent speech contest with the topic “Starting up with French”, French telling story contest for elementary and secondary schools, booth exhibition contest about Francophone countries, cartoon character dressage contest and so on.

Besides, there was “Tourism: The leverage to develop Francophone in the Mekong Delta” seminar to have an overview on the potential development of tourism in region and to discuss something about strategies developing tourism to better approach the market of tourists coming from Francophone countries in parallel with combining teaching and learning French with the occupation in the field of tourism.
