As of the end of April 2024, 143,013 people in Can Tho City participated in compulsory social insurance, reaching 92.62% of the year’s plan. This is an increase of 4,679 compared to the same period last year. However, there are still 11,402 people who have yet to be included. 18,590 people participated in voluntary social insurance, reaching only 49.68% of the year’s plan. There are still 18,828 people yet to be included. The number of people participating in unemployment insurance is 135,876, reaching 92.36% of the plan, an increase of 4,635 people compared to the same period last year, with 11,234 people still to be included. The number of people participating in health insurance is 1,065,565, reaching 90.20% of the plan, a decrease of 10,071 people compared to the same period last year, leaving 115,778 people to be included.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien acknowledged the efforts and determination of party committees, authorities, fatherland front, trade unions, and steering committees at all levels. He emphasized the focus on propagating and mobilizing people to participate in social insurance and health insurance, which has resulted in positive outcomes in the first 4 months of 2024.

To ensure the successful implementation of voluntary social insurance and health insurance by 2024 as outlined by Can Tho authorities, Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien proposed strengthening the roles and responsibilities of Party committees, People's committees, Vietnam Fatherland Front Committees, and socio-political organizations of Can Tho City in implementing social insurance, health insurance, and unemployment insurance policies. It is also essential to mobilize the participation of the entire political system and the local community, especially at the grassroots level.

Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien asked leaders of departments, agencies, and trade unions, who are members of the Steering Committee, to dedicate significant time to direct and organize the implementation at the grassroots level. They should also focus on raising awareness among party members, unionists, and the public about the relevant resolutions, including Resolution No. 20-NQ/TW (October 25, 2017) on enhancement of citizens' health protection, improvement, and care in new situation; Resolution No. 28-NQ/TW (May 23, 2018) on social insurance policy reform; Can Tho City Party Committee's Decision No. 17-NQ/TU (December 4, 2023) on tasks for 2024.

Vice Chairman Nguyen Thuc Hien requested the Steering Committee of districts to propose practical solutions at the grassroots level actively. This includes promoting the role of hamlets and regions to focus on raising awareness about social insurance and health insurance. They should also prioritize social insurance and health insurance policies for the elderly and people in difficult circumstances. Furthermore, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and socio-political organizations of Can Tho City need to continue strengthening propaganda among their union members and actively mobilize people to participate in social insurance and health insurance, with the aim of meeting the set targets.
