On October 22, a delegation from Can Tho City, led by Mr. Pham Van Hieu, Permanent Deputy Secretary of Can Tho City Party Committee and chairman of Can Tho City People's Council, visited Palmerston North City, New Zealand. The Can Tho delegation visited Palmerston North City, New Zealand.

Can Tho City is recognized for its strengths in services and agriculture, earning it the nickname “the city of rivers”. Compared to other areas in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho boasts numerous educational institutions, particularly universities and medical facilities. Its cultural and social sectors have gradually established the city as a regional center.

On the other hand, Palmerston North is considered “the student city” of New Zealand's North Island. Although it represents only 1.9% of New Zealand's population, it employs 2.5% of its workforce. The city offers an excellent educational environment, attracting many international students and research experts. It also hosts several prominent research centers.

Mr. Pham Van Hieu admired New Zealand, highlighting its cool climate, friendly people, and secure social environment. He noted New Zealand's strengths in various areas, particularly education, which Can Tho City aims to enhance through cooperation.

Can Tho City shares many similarities with Palmerston North City, particularly in its role as an education and training center in the Mekong Delta region, including developing high-quality human resources. Mr. Pham Van Hieu expressed Can Tho City's eagerness to explore opportunities for cooperation with Palmerston North City in various areas of mutual interest.

In discussion with the Palmerston North City government, Mr. Pham Van Hieu proposed that both parties explore and implement exchange programs for managerial staff, teachers, and students. He suggested developing a program to send students and researchers from Can Tho City to New Zealand for collaborative work and study and vice versa.

Can Tho also hopes to welcome more volunteers from New Zealand and Palmerston North City to participate in English training classes for students, civil servants, and public employees. Additionally, Mr. Pham Van Hieu desired stronger cooperation in scientific research and technology transfer related to waste treatment, environmental protection, effective resource use, and climate change adaptation.

Can Tho City is open to welcoming scientists from Palmerston North City and New Zealand to collaborate on research and projects and develop models for climate change adaptation in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta region. Mr. Pham Van Hieu emphasized that 2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and New Zealand. He hopes Palmerston North City and Can Tho City will deepen their mutual understanding, leading to connection activities and potential cooperation agreements in various fields to strengthen the developing relationship between Vietnam and New Zealand.
