Cooperation in education and training is a traditional area of collaboration and one of the highlights in the relationship between Vietnam and New Zealand. This is an important premise for Can Tho City and New Zealand to further enhance their cooperation in the fields of education and training. Amid deep integration into the global economy, the city's leadership has identified education and training as key to developing a high-quality workforce to support its development goals.

Currently, the city has 8 universities and 63 vocational education institutions that play a role in training high-quality human resources to serve the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. Therefore, Can Tho City has been actively seeking international cooperation opportunities in education and training to enhance the quality of human resource training and to develop the educational workforce and management staff.

During the meeting, New Zealand educational institutions highly appreciated the central role of Can Tho City in education and training in the Mekong Delta region. They particularly praised the potential for cooperation between Can Tho City and New Zealand's universities. They also shared experiences and information on cooperation directions in education and training between New Zealand and the Asian-Pacific region, including Vietnam, in the near future.

Mr. Ben McNally-Burn expressed his admiration for the number of universities and vocational education institutions in Can Tho City, the quality of education and training, and the students trained at universities in the area. He also praised the efforts and dedication of Can Tho City's government in paying special attention to education, particularly in seeking strategic cooperation opportunities in education and training with New Zealand. He identified this as an opportunity for both parties to build and implement education and training plans based on existing strengths and needs.

Mr. Ben McNally-Burn emphasized that besides attracting a large number of university and postgraduate students, in recent years, New Zealand's secondary schools have also attracted a large number of Vietnamese students. Therefore, enhancing cooperation and sharing information in the field of education and training with Can Tho City is also one of New Zealand's goals.

Additionally, to support Can Tho in organizing short and long-term training courses for management officials, teachers of high schools in the city on education management work, teaching methods, and help improve English proficiency for students, teachers, and officials.

Can Tho City also looks forward to receiving more volunteers from New Zealand to experience and implement meaningful activities such as organizing English training classes for students and the city's officials.

Currently, New Zealand has programs such as the New Zealand-ASEAN Scholarship, annual short-term scholarship programs on various topics for officials to study and learn from New Zealand, New Zealand Government scholarships for high school students, and Prime Minister's scholarships for Asia... Can Tho hopes to be given priority in receiving information about these scholarships for city management officials, teachers, and students.

In 2015, Can Tho City and Victoria University (VUW), Wellington, New Zealand, signed an MOU for short-term training cooperation for city officials as part of a project to enhance the international integration capacity of officials and representatives of the Can Tho City People's Council for the 2016–2021 term. From 2016 to 2018, Can Tho City organized 4 training sessions with approximately 91 participants.

Can Tho University of Technology and Can Tho Technical Economic College also signed an MOU with VUW for the exchange of lecturers and students, cooperation in postgraduate training for lecturers, research students, cooperation in implementing the 2+2 undergraduate training program, scientific research collaboration, and organizing specialized seminars.

In March 2017, Can Tho University of Technology signed a cooperation agreement with LINQ Company in New Zealand to support the university’s use of the company’s software and to collaborate on research in the field of information technology.

The Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City has conducted numerous visits and meetings with educational organizations, secondary schools, and universities in New Zealand to exchange experiences, implement training models, and provide training for teachers and principals in both Vietnam and New Zealand.

Most recently, in March 2024, the Secretary of the City Party Committee of Can Tho accompanied the Prime Minister's delegation on an official visit to New Zealand, participating in activities such as visiting crop and food research centers, Vietnam-New Zealand business forums, and meeting with students at Victoria University.
